Yes it is that bad. It's awful.

Thunderduck · 23/08/2009 22:30

It isn't pretty or stylish.

Bleh · 23/08/2009 22:32

I like it

maize · 24/08/2009 00:29

My nana is Ethel, she hates it and says it was old fashioned when her mum named her it in the 20s. She has always gone by 'Eth'

I think its a hideous name!

jemart · 24/08/2009 00:30

Old lady of Eastenders fame. Had a little pug dog.

piscesmoon · 24/08/2009 07:35

I had a great aunt Ethel, known as Eth,like maize's nana, she hated it. I think that people ought to ask these old ladies what they think of their names before they saddle a new born with them.

bluesnowfalcon · 24/08/2009 07:44

Ethel - sorry but i hate it. Being a teacher I can't see it leading anywhere that is good! All I can see is taunting and being horrid in the playground. Sorry

Anste · 25/08/2009 21:19

You can't burden your child with that! Would you like to be named Ethel?

spudmasher · 25/08/2009 21:25

Nah. Witchy.

raggie · 26/08/2009 11:28

I like it. Think it's sweet.

jamandjerusalem · 26/08/2009 11:33

I don't like it much, nor Hilda. I do like Edith, nn Edie, and I love Stella and Elsie.

Get her little pug-faced dog called Willie, and the image is complete.
The name conjures up two images for me: one of little Ethel in the Eastenders of yore and another of a grim-faced fishwife in a headscarf and curlers.

foxytocin · 26/08/2009 14:30

lovely Anglo-saxon name.

BroodyChook · 26/08/2009 14:32

Not keen I'm afraid, unless it's for a chicken.

MamaLazarou · 26/08/2009 18:11

It's a ridiculous name.

Bethel is far prettier

Silvj · 30/08/2009 03:13

Bethel is far prettier.

southernbelle77 · 30/08/2009 06:35

Oh no, not for me! It is one of those old lady names that should never have been 'in' and certainly shouldn't be making a revival!
Definitely eastenders and pug-faced dog images which isn't right!!

SammyK · 30/08/2009 08:24

Don't like Ethel but I do know a little Elsie who is adorable and definately suits her name.

MaryBS · 30/08/2009 08:37

Has anyone seen the film Shakespeare in Love? in there, Shakespeare talks about writing a play called "Ethel the pirate's daughter".

Polgara2 · 30/08/2009 08:55

Well I like it but it was my mum's name so I may be just being a but sentimental. She was always called Ett or Ettie tho.
