Suede

Now I have heard some names over the last few years that strike me as odd. But MN frequently tells me otherwise (Velvet being a case in point a few months ago ). DH tells me not to be narrow-minded [sigh]. But DD came back from swimming the other day and told me she had met a girl called Suede. I asked her to repeat it and no I hadn't misheard it.

Am I just hopelessly old-fashioned or is Suede exceptionally strange name for a child?

BTW I am assuming that was the spelling.

oooh it's a bit rude. lIke Velvet, but older, more worn out velvet.

HumphreyCobbler · 12/08/2009 16:37

very strange

I think velvet is rather odd too

FlightHattendant · 12/08/2009 16:38

Oh dear.

we met a boy called Gage the other day.

I made him spell it

MaggieBelleVirgo · 12/08/2009 16:38

ps, I think velvet is a ludicrous name for a baby too. journo suzy godson (??) called her poor child this. slang for labia isn't it.

odd choice

cluckyagain · 12/08/2009 16:39

Perhaps Turnip would be better......

OrmIrian · 12/08/2009 16:40

Is it really margo Ah well no worse than Willy for a boy I suppose.

OrmIrian · 12/08/2009 16:41

FlightHattendant - a (rather strange) friend of ours called his son Gage - they've moved away since, and I'm not sure where they're living now, but maybe it's the same one - can't be that many, can there. I can't remember when he was born though, so can't work out how old he'd be now.

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 12/08/2009 16:51

Velvet is the name of the the girl in National Velvet, I don't think it's dreadful, but Suede .

FlightHattendant · 12/08/2009 16:52

Oh...he was around 9 I think. He was a sweet boy complex family situation from what I could gather.

CarmenSanDiego · 12/08/2009 16:52

I quite like Suede Less girly than Velvet, I think.

Gage is popular in the US

TheGashlycrumbTinies · 12/08/2009 16:52

It really slang for labia?

pinkmagic1 · 12/08/2009 16:54

Came across a boy called 'Diesel' recently. Wondering if he has a brother called 'Petrol'!

squeaver · 12/08/2009 16:56

Is it "Swed" or "Swayed"?

JemL · 12/08/2009 17:00

Wasn't Gage the name of the little boy in the film Pet Cemetary?! It always reminds me of the animatronic little boy stabbing someone (haven't seen it for years!)

Jujubean77 · 12/08/2009 17:01

Velvet sounds like a prostitute

bleh · 12/08/2009 17:02

I thought it was only slang in the Victorian era, hence the TV show "Tipping the Velvet" which was Victorian slang for Lesbianism?

MaggieBelleVirgo · 12/08/2009 17:17

Oh right, well, I've read the book and seen the programme, so for me now, that's what it means. I can't de-programme that expression out of my head!

pointydog · 12/08/2009 17:31

Your dd must have got it wrong, orm.

Dd2 (when she was 4) told us about a new girl at her nursery called Flipper.

Turned out she was called Philippa.

TiggerIsEisCat · 12/08/2009 17:39

pointy PMSL @ flipper

i had a friend whose dog was called suede after the 90's indie band not a good childs name but ok for a dog i reckon

MovingOutOfBlighty · 12/08/2009 17:43

You havent misheard. I know of a family with a Denim and Suede. Yuckadoodah.

pixiestix · 12/08/2009 18:14

Flipper!
I remember being in hysterics in primary school when we learnt the word "Vagina". My best friends aunt was called Regina and we all misheard and thought she was named after her mum's lady-bits!!!

MaggieBelleVirgo · 12/08/2009 18:22

Denim and Suede! omg, sounds like cheap scent by Lentheric, aimed at teenagers.

Concordia · 13/08/2009 00:13

i miss the band suede.
They were good but not good enough to name a DD after IMHO
