Hi all, a friend of mine is having a c section tomorrow (v excited for her!) and i found out that she 's def having a boy and has chosen to name him finlay...... I'm nearly 16 weeks and dh and i had also chosen finlay (ONLY boys name we both agree on and love) really set on our choice but worried it'd be frowned on or that people would just think we copied her (god that sounds childish!)
any views / advice re this??
xx

i think you should find another name purely because i think Finley is an incredibly dull name....Flynn?.

I know siblings called Esmereld and Esmerelda. I asked if it was confusing and they said no!>

boodleboot addresses the issue of what the big, grey thing with massive ears in the middle of the room is.....

maggievirgo · 03/08/2009 22:13

yeah i think they did you a favour. finlay is ok but it's a bit feminine sounding to my ear, and now there are a lot of them.

Fergus! I tell you, FERGUS

Finbar? Phinneas? Finn?

I really like the name Finn (and the longer versions) but didn't go for it in the end as it's so popular these days.

nappyaddict · 04/08/2009 03:02

Same here lowrib. Finn and Finlay are so popular atm I would be tempted to go for something like Finbar, Finian, Fintan, Finnegan, Phineas etc

jabberwocky · 04/08/2009 03:15

How about waiting until you know if it's a boy, then tell her "You know, Finlay is a family name and we love it and had always wanted to use it" etc. etc.

TwoHot · 04/08/2009 09:47

Fergus! There ya go! Perfect!

there is no reason why you can't use the name as well if you love it.

personally i wouldn't. i'd go for one of the alternatives on here - possible finn?

MrsMc82 · 08/08/2009 22:07

Yes she had the baby and she stuck to finlay.

Which i think is a lovely name still so prob will stick to it for the time being too.... Sounds awful but really can't be bothered trying to think of any others that me and dh agree on atm.... Like you say got 24 weeks (and counting!) to wait though and who knows what'll happen between now and then!

fwiw tho i don't like fergus as sounds just a bit too much like fungus. Not keen on finn as is too short. And For rome reason have irrational dislike me names being with Ph.... Aw and there was me thinking it was dh who was the fussy/non adventurous one when it comes to names.
;-)

I really struggle to like any boys names and then any i do like don't go with Alan as a middle name (dh's family tradition for first born boys)!
