Ingrid or Astrid?

DH prefers Ingrid and I prefer Astrid. We're Scottish and have no Scandinavian connection (or Orcadian for that matter) other than a fondness for holidays there. What do you think?

Ingrid is nicer to my ears

But neither has any pet name potential

midnightexpress · 22/07/2009 17:13

Love both, marginally prefer Astrid.

HeadFairy · 22/07/2009 17:15

Prefer astrid, she's blonde and beautiful... Ingrid is a mousey haired librarian. Sorry, I've been playing with that name thingy too long

Sickofbloodyswineflu · 22/07/2009 17:15

Astrid is nicer in my opinion..I know a few Ingrids, but havent heard of an Astrid in ages.

19fran76 · 22/07/2009 17:17

Astrid is great

KleineMaus · 22/07/2009 17:18

frankly, you're right about the pet name thing. Hadn't given it much thought, although we have joked about it being called 'Thingy', if it's called Ingrid, which is a bit cruel. We already have a ds, Elliot and it doesn't get shortened to anything either. On the nickname score I'm a bit worried about the 'ass' beginning of Astrid and the potential it might have for teasing.

Astrid is lovely

OrphanAnnie · 22/07/2009 23:35

Astrid for me, I mentioned it to a Scandinavian friend hoping she might use it for her DD but she went for Poppy instead

macwoozy · 23/07/2009 00:15

They both sound harsh to me

MamaLazarou · 23/07/2009 08:42

They are both brilliant names.

The only reservation I would have is if people shortened Astrid... to Ass.

piscesmoon · 23/07/2009 08:50

I don't like either.

EachPeachPearMum · 23/07/2009 08:57

Nicknames for Astrid-
Sassa (proper Germanic nn btw)
Asti
Asta
Astri
Streedie

I think Ingrid less common in UK though- I don't know any Ingrids at all, but know several Astrids- children and grown-up.

Fillyjonk · 23/07/2009 08:59

I love them both

VAB · 23/07/2009 09:45

Are you me?!

These are the 2 names I am umming and ahhing about - so I obviously love them both!!

My middle name is Astrid, so that's where I got that from but I like Ingrid as an alternative. Similar to Astrid but equally nice. I'd like to go for Ingrid, but OH prefers Astrid.

There, bet that's helped you loads!!

TheChilliMooseNeedsaDiary · 23/07/2009 09:53

I like Astrid.

skihorse · 23/07/2009 10:03

I love Astrid - went to school with too many Ingrids!

MamaLazarou · 23/07/2009 12:15

I'm laughing at the idea of Astrid being shortened to 'Astri'! Would Ingrid be shortened to 'Ingri'?

DownyEmerald · 23/07/2009 12:25

Ingrid definately

Ingrid Bergmann - fantastic and there is a song (Billy Bragg?)

Tho' that might put you off!

themachinist · 23/07/2009 12:27

Totally love them both; DP wouldn't considered either though. Think Ingrid is preferable only because lots of people said 'washing powder' to me when i was considering Astrid.

I dont see a librarian, i see a strong vampy woman in control of her life?

Mumcentreplus · 23/07/2009 12:41

If you want my honest opinion they are both equally hideous.. but if I had to choose it would be Astrid..in honour of one of my fav jazz artists Astrud Gilberto...

Mumcentreplus · 23/07/2009 12:43

...I see both as waspy-faced,thin-lipped spinsters

veryindecisive · 23/07/2009 16:56

I know two Ingrids - both very strong ladies!!
One is a complete man eater but both lovely! (And both tall, blonde and gorgeous actually!)

I don't know any Astrids but it is a v pretty name.

MayorNaze · 23/07/2009 16:57

astrid

MayorNaze · 23/07/2009 16:57
