Spunky, lively, or tomboy names for girls? Any ideas?
I'm thinking along the lines of

Storm
Tempest
Stevie
Jessie
Alexi
Regan
Morgan
Jade
Blais
Roxy
Hayden
Vita/Zita
Blak e
Saskia? (i think i'm hearing 'sassy' in this lol. Still sounds like a lively person though.)

Any others that you'd associate? Even if they are more traditional names that for you conjure this sort of image.

I have a Meg and she is beyond fiesty. really glad we picked it; hadn't occurred to us until dh and I sat down in Costa Coffee when i was about 7 month pregnant with a copy of 40,001 Baby Names, and decided that we wouldn't leave until we'd settled on a name.

georgina -george

gagamama · 08/07/2009 14:45

PMSL at Fanny being 'spunky'.

I'd go for something like:

Kate
Nina
Josie
Eliza

Short with strong consonants, basically. I think literal or onomatopoeic names (Storm, Blais etc) are a bit naff really. They're not strong names, they're just names of strong things.

Knew a friend of a friend at uni called Basia, pron. Basha - I honestly assumed it was a nickname arising from a moment of drunken violence until I saw it written down. Think it's Polish. Bash could be a cool nickname for a tomboy, but the potential for misspellings/mispronunciations abound (+ without a Polish connection prob just weird)...

Jamie is a legitimate girls name too.

Love Stevie for a girl too - short for Stephanie maybe?

I was a proper tomboy who spent my childhood falling out of trees and chasing my two older brothers, and hates my very feminine name.

mrsradders · 09/07/2009 14:28

i like roxy and blais, what about Taylor Blair or Kitty, i think although its nice idea it being tomyboy ish it would be nice to stillm have a girly element to it after all still a girl!!!

Sunshinemummy · 09/07/2009 14:33

Scout is fab.

Also love boys names for girls like some mentioned on this thread Stevie, Frankie etc. There's a girl in a Judy Blume booked called Davey and I always thought that was lovely.

I don't think a name has to sound like a boy's name to suit a tomboy.

Good strong solid girls names are 'spunky' if the girl herself is - I don't think you can form someone by their name.

My girls are Katherine and Rachel, and they are as spunky as you could wish for - though R is more of a girlie in dress etc.

surrofab · 10/07/2009 18:56

I know a girl called Teddi,it's not short for anything and she is just like you described.
I like Scout from the list also i personally like Harper.

had a good friend at school that was a teddi, short for theresa.

i love boys names for girls but i think they should have th option of having a nice girly option should they want to use it.

I have an Eleanor. we shorten it to Len(ny)

i think its lovely

NanaJo · 12/07/2009 05:19

My Ds1 had a Meg in his class. It wasn't short for anything and I love it! Such a darling little girl, too.

taylorsmummy2004 · 20/07/2009 23:37

I have a 4 yr old daughter called Taylor, she is as confident and sociable as you can get!! No idea where she gets it from as both me and her dad are shy!! Expecting no2 just now, and liking Reece for a boy, and Kali, Brooke or Georgie for a girl...any feedback?

Laquitar · 21/07/2009 00:03

Artemis? (tomboy Godness)

Although i agree with Nooka

Oortcloud · 28/12/2012 05:27

I think Josie Katherine is a good name. It could be Kate, Kat, Katie, Kaitlyn, Kath, or Kathy.

Oortcloud · 28/12/2012 05:29

Joslyn is good too! It could be Jo, Josie, Lynn, Sly, Osly, Jose, or Jos.

Oortcloud · 28/12/2012 05:55

A few more good ones are:

Cassandra; Cass, Andri, Cassie, Cassy, Sandra, or Sandy
Dominique; Dom, Mimi, Domin, Domi, Inque, or Dimi
Seraphina; Sarah, Sera, Sierra, Phine, Raph, Rina, or Finn
Eleanor; Elly, Leah, Ellen, Len, Lenny, or Nora
Emmilyne; Emma, Lyne, Em, Emily, Emmi, Eline, or Elly
Rachel; Rach, Ray, Chelly, or Rachy
Stephanie; Steph, Phaine, Finn, Stevie, or Teph
Lauria; Lorie, Laura, Lauri, Laurel, Lauren, Aurora, or Rory
Calpurnia; Cali, Alure, Cal, Calico, or Nia
Charlotte; Charlie, Carmen, Arlate, Charles, or Hachy
Veronica; Veri, Ronni, Nita, Rita, or Rori
Caroline; Cara, Carol, Cari, Lynn, Rolyn, Care, or Loriline
Lorraine; Lori, Layn, Rain, Lore, or Rane

That's all I can think of right now. Hope it helps!

MoelFammau · 28/12/2012 06:52

I have a Robin, aka Bobzilla.

LadyLetch · 28/12/2012 11:18

I agree that I like names where the children can choose their own nickname time suit their personalities. What happens if you go fora tomboy name and you have the prissiest girl going? Your best bet is to choose a name with lots of options and allow your children to pick the name that suits them best.

For example, a Charlotte could be a Charlie (tomboyish) or a Lottie (girlie).

We have a Katherine, but she chose to call herself Kitty. Not my choice, but it suits her as she us very girlie. My eldest DD is not like her at all, but Kitty suits her personality (at the moment), though I suspect she'll grow out of the name in due course.

As for Margaret, my DDs think it is a really exotic name. Whenever they role play, one of them is always a Margaret! It'll probably be the names our children will use, and we'll baulk at much in the same way that our parents baulk at Arthur, Alfie etc.

Astralabe · 29/12/2012 20:43

Rita? (think Rita Hayworth..) I have a Sasha Rita and the first thing my mum said was what a feisty name it is..

Rhubarbgarden · 30/12/2012 08:51

A three year old who 'rules the playgroup'? Oh dear.

I agree with others that it's a bad idea to choose a name that implies a certain character. Dd has a friend called Delilah, and she's a total shrinking violet. The name sounds frankly ridiculous on her.

I like Margaret. I know a couple of little Maggies. A Margaret can be anyone without having any particular name 'baggage' to live up to.
