Spunky, lively, or tomboy names for girls? Any ideas?
I'm thinking along the lines of

Storm
Tempest
Stevie
Jessie
Alexi
Regan
Morgan
Jade
Blais
Roxy
Hayden
Vita/Zita
Blak e
Saskia? (i think i'm hearing 'sassy' in this lol. Still sounds like a lively person though.)

Any others that you'd associate? Even if they are more traditional names that for you conjure this sort of image.

It was the name of a girl in The Outcast who was lively, bit of a tomboy/growing into a young woman.

I know a Harriet knwn as Harry. I think it's gorgeous for a girl.

Lilyloo · 26/06/2009 20:02

I have one of those and she is called Martha , thank god we didn't go with a flowery name i had planned

SevernTrentWater · 26/06/2009 20:49

Lots of good ideas!
I was very surprised actually to see that Storm is in the top 1000 names baby names in the uk 2007, but then i was also very surprised to see Coco and a few others as i think in britain we name a bit more conservatively than in america.

I have an Alexandra known as Lexie and she is DEFINATELY all those things

I also have a DD called Dylan which I think is fabulous but 99% don't agree

Momino · 26/06/2009 21:20

love Harry short for Harriet, Jojay

womma · 26/06/2009 23:29

I thought you were thinking of calling your child spunky, lively or tomboy! I should go to bed.

womma · 26/06/2009 23:30

I know a lovely Josie who is a proper tomboy

nooka · 27/06/2009 05:49

I don't think it is very fair to give a child a name with a strong association of personality, because you have no idea whether she will be Spunky/Lively or a Tomboy. In the same way choosing something very pretty/sweet is also a bit unfair. The ideal to me are names that have lots of variation, so that your child can choose which one that suits - which may be different things at different times. So names like Frances, which could be Fran or Frankie as well as the more gentle/elegant Frances, or the classic Elizabeth or Margaret which have umpteen shortenings are much better than names that can only be used in one way or another.

Jojay · 27/06/2009 08:18

Fair point Nooka

TotallyAndUtterlyPaninied · 27/06/2009 08:51

But nooka- a baby in this day and age called Margaret? That would be hideous.

seeker · 27/06/2009 08:56

Why on earth would Margaret be hideous? Lots of brilliant shortenings, apart from anything else!

And why, when thinking of a strong lively names for a girl do people automatically think of giving her a boy's name?

Seeker 'tomboy' was in the title. I think Margaret is very dated. Ruby may be back but Margaret is not.

violethill · 27/06/2009 10:59

I agree with seeker that it seems a shame to use boys names for a girl. There are so many great names out there - far more girls than boys names actually - so why do it?

Stevie, Jerry etc are abbreviations of boys' names.

If you want a strong name for a girl, there are dozens of lovely classic ones to pick from. A little dubious about the 'tomboy' thing though... isn't that a bit like trying to mould your child to fit a pre-conceived image?

Jbck · 27/06/2009 12:01

DD2 has a name that everyone says 'oh I thought that was a boys name' or 'didn't you say you had two girls' but the shortened form is girly without being twee.

It's mentioned above and I found it on a site that was unusual unisex names. I wanted soemthing to go with tomboyish DD1.

At the end of the day your child grows into their name a bit and in most cases you can't imagine them being called anything else.

Whatever you choose it'll be lovely.

dizzydixies · 27/06/2009 14:48

oh Jbck thank goodness I'm not the only one getting those reactions

seeker · 27/06/2009 15:03

I wanted a tomboyish girl - I imagined her in miniature Levis and Timberlands. But she has been, from birth, the girliest thing imaginable. However she still loves camping and sailing and riding and charging about the countryside -she just does it in long hair and sequins and eyeliner!

Do you think it's because of her name? It was REALLY off the wall and unusual 13 years ago - she's called Grace!

dizzydixies · 27/06/2009 15:04

sounds like you have the best of both worlds Seeker

I wanted a Grace but when DD1 came out at 10lb4oz we decided against it and the other two were no smaller either

Jbck · 27/06/2009 16:43

dizzydixies DD1 is Alexandra but she hates it & shouts I'm Alex' at some people or just ignores others if they call her it. I ocassionally call her Lexie but I'm the only one she lets call her that.

alicecrail · 27/06/2009 16:50

I think Jude fits all those things, as someone has already mentioned.
How about Christie?

nooka · 27/06/2009 17:56

I think that Jude is a great name. I wouldn't choose Grace though, or ny other virtue names, seems a bit like asking for trouble! I don't know any babies that are called Margaret right now, but that's because they are called Maggie or Meggie or Gretel or Maisie or Peggie. As I said lots of variation, to fit any time. I think that names are important, but they don't (in general) change the personality of the child. Giving your child a feisty name will not make them into feisty child. I'm not even sure about the boy named Sue type theory (give your child a silly name to toughen them up from all the fighting).

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 27/06/2009 17:56

Scout. It was this baby's girl's name, but I am having a boy so you can have it.

I just love it.
