My Israeli friend is called Shifra. It's another spelling variation of the same name and everyone can pronounce it correctly. It's a lovely name and goes well with the others.

boodleboot · 21/06/2009 09:46

i love our other DC names but this one is bloomin awful....

Miriam would win by a mile for me

boodleboot · 21/06/2009 09:46

your other DC names

hocuspontas · 21/06/2009 09:49

Miriam goes best with the others I think. And prefer Shifra or Shefra. On first glance the other spelling does look like Shipra

Firawla · 21/06/2009 11:54

I think its really nice but I do prefer the sp Shifra.
I thought it was prn. Shi-fra, not shee.. if you see what I mean? but I could be wrong! (I prefer it prn my way )

TheFallenMadonna · 21/06/2009 12:04

Miriam is lovely.

I actually prefer Shiphrah spelt your way. It looks right - reminds me of Zipporah. I would spot the -ph-, but probably pronounce it with a short -i- rather than the -ee- sound. Do bear in mind though that some people are ridiculously stubborn about pronouncing something incorrectly. Don't count on it everyone saying it right just because you have told them how it should be said. Their issue if course, but your DD's problem IYSWIM.

BabyBaby123 · 21/06/2009 12:33

Miriam is much nicer. Also like Mariam

missmem · 21/06/2009 13:59

Really awful - sorry!

chaya5738 · 21/06/2009 14:01

I like it but would probably also pronounce it with a short "i" not an "ee" sound. I would probably also spell it Shifra.

I like Shira more (which means song in Hebrew).

And Miriam is pretty.

belgo · 21/06/2009 14:04

What about Phaedra?

JoPie · 21/06/2009 15:12

Siofra in Irish, pretty much the same pronounciation.

Miriam is beautiful with some lovely nn choices.

The other one, Shiphrah - all your other dcs names have an obvious pn, with this one people are often going to get it wrong, Ship-rah. Anyway pn 'Sheefrah' reminds me of the baddie in Casino Royale (Chiffre).

It sounds like an Asian name to me, whereas your other names sound much more, well, British. For this reason, I don't think it goes at all. Miriam is better but I don't love it either tbh. Sorry.

thirtysomething · 21/06/2009 17:10

it's my Hebrew name. To be honest have never been keen on it but that may be because I have issues with the religious part of my upbringing. i guess objectively it's actually very pretty!

13avon · 21/06/2009 17:19

It's actually spelt Siofra and its Irish. It's not an unusual name in Ireland. I think its gorgeous. People often say it like this: Shee-a-fra but with the -a- mostly swallowed by the -ee-.

TheFallenMadonna · 21/06/2009 17:56

Actually, it's spelt Shiphrah and it's Hebrew. There is also an Irish name Siofra.

nessus · 21/06/2009 18:40

The name sounds wrong. And when you ask if it goes with the other names listed - are those the names of your other children

LOL @ belgo

BTW Miriam is a beautiful name.

I also thought of the Irish name but obviously that's not what you're after. It's ok, much prefer Shira though. I also know an Israeli girl called Naama, which I really like.

kitkatqueen · 21/06/2009 19:08

Sorry, no, anything but!

iHateDairylea · 21/06/2009 19:14

Hephzibah is better.

For some reason Shiphams meat paste came to mind. Sorry your other children have such beautiful names, what happened to you this time??

tummytickler · 21/06/2009 19:37

Hmmmm - i have never heard of Shiphams meat paste! Is it vile (sounds as though it might be!). Does everyone know it but me???
Nessus - yes those are the names of my children are you ing them??? or that they dont go together?
Thanks for your opinions ladies - keep them coming!!!
I may sway back to Hilda or Aphra or Jean!

bloss - i am not sure if i am going to be able to get 'shifra brains' out of my head now .
Better it is thought of now than by a 12 year old in the playground though!
