if you really love hebrew/biblical names waht about Bathsheba (batsheva)

Megglevache · 21/06/2009 19:46

Your girls have very much nature inspired names, what about picking something more like that, I keep thinking Shifra Brains too, but initially I thought it sounded like sheep-dip

I found these nature ones:

Alyssum
Amaryllis
Azalea
Blossom
Bluebell
Camellia
Clover
Daffodil
Dahlia
Fern
Forsythia
Freesia
Gardenia
Hyacinth
Iris
Ivy
Jessamine
Lilac
Magnolia
Marigold
Morning Glory (!)eeeek
Pansy
Poppy
Posey
Primrose
Sunflower
Tansy
Tiger Lilly
Tulip

If you really love it then go for it I say...

Ruth is good, or grace

rafa · 21/06/2009 20:06

i really like it !

MrsSchadenfreude · 21/06/2009 22:52

I am at "Shifra brains." I think the letter P and F are the same in Hebrew, and as it will have been transliterated, it doesn't really matter how you spell it. I think Shifra looks nicer but I have an aversion to names ending in "ah" anyway.

hester · 21/06/2009 23:14

I agree with daisyj

nooka · 22/06/2009 03:48

It goes fine with your boys names, as they are very OT, but looks a little peculiar with the girls names, which are very similar "old lady" names. I think Miriam is very nice btw but again doesn't particularly go with the other girls. But then I guess that's because your boys names and girls names are just so different in style.

HuffwardlyRudge · 22/06/2009 09:39

Gosh. Haven't people been horrid. Am cringing a bit - this is a side of Mumsnet that makes me want to run to the exit and not look back.

Your names are beautiful. It's great that you have found a name you are excited about. Ignore the cats bum mouths and name your beautiful baby whatever YOU decide is right for her, and right for your family.

And those of you who galloped gleefully in to piss on the OP's chips, how about making the next few things you post on Mumsmnet useful and pleasant?

MamaLazarou · 22/06/2009 10:22

Shiphrah is lovely - I really like it. I would imagine a Shiphrah as having long, black, glossy hair and perfect eyebrows. It's beautiful and exotic.

Miriam, however, brings to mind a downtrodden mum-of-12 wearing dungarees that smell of gone-off milk.

LaDiDaDi · 22/06/2009 10:30

Just doesn't go with the other names imo and tbh I really don't like it either.

Miriam and Jean are much better imo.

fucksticks · 22/06/2009 10:32

I LOVE all your DCs names, but dont think Shiprah goes with them at all, sorry
Aphra goes lovely with them and is along similar lines

Frasersmum123 · 22/06/2009 10:34

Sorry but its not my cup of tea - I can imagine her getting teased, and she will always be telling people how to say/spell it.

serin · 22/06/2009 10:45

It is growing on me.

chipmonkey · 22/06/2009 10:46

I know two Siofras and AFAIK, neither has been called Siofra-brains!
I love it whatever way you spell it.

HellHathNoFury · 22/06/2009 10:47

I thought it was ship-ra too, but then I am dumb.

Shifra better but still not my choice.

Shira better still, very pretty, I know a little Shira and thought the name was lovely.

BunnyLebowski · 22/06/2009 11:24

One of my big sis's uni friends is called Siofra which presumably is the Irish version.

Lovely name imo.

chipmonkey · 22/06/2009 12:16

Shira reminds me of He-Man

ludog · 22/06/2009 13:15

I love it, but with the Irish spelling...Síofra.

Fimbo · 22/06/2009 16:22

I don't like it and don't think it goes with your other dc names.

mrsradders · 22/06/2009 16:26

i think i'm with daisyj on the spelling it would drive me nuts having to explain how it is pronounced all the time but sounds very pretty, but miriam is nice too. x

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 22/06/2009 16:43

I'd call her Ship - rah. I'm not stupid.

SarahL2 · 22/06/2009 16:55

Reminds me of the french word 'chiffre' which means 'number'

OonaghBhuna · 22/06/2009 21:29

My niece is called Siofra, this is the irish version. I think its a lovely unusual name.

boodleboot · 23/06/2009 20:50

do ou know what this name has really been growing on me over the last couple of days...only the irish spelling tho....its actually a really pretty little name

Siofra....i like it
