dh & I love the name Shay but it's not getting a very good reception among most people we've mentioned it to. In fact a few have thought I was winding them up & laughed themselves silly until realizing I was serious. Please tell me what you think.

Not at all keen tbh.

belgo · 12/06/2009 08:28

I think it's irish? I'm not too keen on it. If you want a similar sounding irish name, Sean is lovely.

fembear · 12/06/2009 08:29

As in Shay Guevara?

twelveyeargap · 12/06/2009 08:30

Short for Seamus or just Shay? Seamus on the birth certificate gives your child a choice between the two when they're older, if Shay is meeting resistance.

hiccymapops · 12/06/2009 08:31

I love it, it is Irish isn't it?

MadamAnt · 12/06/2009 08:41

Seamus is lovely

licquorice · 12/06/2009 08:42

Che Guevara!

Thandeka · 12/06/2009 08:46

I quite like it to be honest. I think its the name of the little brother of Shane the female lead in the L-word one of my fave dramas.

Not sure I would call my kid it - but I do like it!

hullygully · 12/06/2009 08:50

Not unless you live in a painted caravan pulled by a shire horse.

EyeballshasBackBoobs · 12/06/2009 09:00

Shay is nice, Seamus is gorgeous but probaby best avoided unless you can claim some Irishness as it is the stereotypical Irish name. It's hard to comment on Shay as I know it as a very Irish name so can't hear it on its own IYSWIM

EachPeachPearMum · 12/06/2009 09:02

We know a little Che (as in Guevara)- nice, very unusual but I'm sure some people roll their eyes.

goomum · 12/06/2009 10:43

Lovely - go for it. People will like it and tell you so or shut up and say nothing once baby is here. I would suggest mentioning it to no-one until B day! It is a name that will grow on people i reckon. It's a nice sound and will be great on a man too. A kind of weak at the knees Mills and Boon hero!

sonniboo · 12/06/2009 10:46

I like it, actually.

JoPie · 13/06/2009 11:37

Che is a nickname rather than a name, his name was Ernesto Guevara, Che just means buddy or friend.

Shay, to me its an old guys nn for Seamus. I know quite a few, but they are all over 40. And mostly farmers. (I'm in Ireland BTW)

Pingpong · 13/06/2009 12:50

No - sorry. Prefer Sean or Seamus.

LionstarBigPants · 13/06/2009 12:53

I know a gorgeous little boy called Shay and it really suits him. Go for it.

SouthMum · 13/06/2009 12:54

Sorry no, I know someone with a dog called Shay

I really don't like it, but if you and your dh do, then fire away.

ForgetfulNess · 13/06/2009 22:00

Lovely name, your family and friends will learn to love it.

I think it is a lovely name and not all that common. I met a Shae last year in his 20s' and he is the first I have ever come across. He wasn't of Irish descent thought, he was from the Carribean.

MintChocAddict · 13/06/2009 23:37

I know a baby Shay from a family of Irish descent.
Has kind of grown on me.

Thunderduck · 14/06/2009 01:04

I know a few Shays. It isn't horrible, but I don't really like it either.
