Shay for a boy

dh & I love the name Shay but it's not getting a very good reception among most people we've mentioned it to. In fact a few have thought I was winding them up & laughed themselves silly until realizing I was serious. Please tell me what you think.

I think it's irish? I'm not too keen on it. If you want a similar sounding irish name, Sean is lovely.

As in Shay Guevara?

Short for Seamus or just Shay? Seamus on the birth certificate gives your child a choice between the two when they're older, if Shay is meeting resistance.

I quite like it to be honest. I think its the name of the little brother of Shane the female lead in the L-word one of my fave dramas.

Not sure I would call my kid it - but I do like it!

Shay is nice, Seamus is gorgeous but probaby best avoided unless you can claim some Irishness as it is the stereotypical Irish name. It's hard to comment on Shay as I know it as a very Irish name so can't hear it on its own IYSWIM

We know a little Che (as in Guevara)- nice, very unusual but I'm sure some people roll their eyes.

Lovely - go for it. People will like it and tell you so or shut up and say nothing once baby is here. I would suggest mentioning it to no-one until B day! It is a name that will grow on people i reckon. It's a nice sound and will be great on a man too. A kind of weak at the knees Mills and Boon hero!

Che is a nickname rather than a name, his name was Ernesto Guevara, Che just means buddy or friend.

Shay, to me its an old guys nn for Seamus. I know quite a few, but they are all over 40. And mostly farmers. (I'm in Ireland BTW)

I think it is a lovely name and not all that common. I met a Shae last year in his 20s' and he is the first I have ever come across. He wasn't of Irish descent thought, he was from the Carribean.

I know a baby Shay from a family of Irish descent.
Has kind of grown on me.

I know a few Shays. It isn't horrible, but I don't really like it either.
