Shay for a boy

dh & I love the name Shay but it's not getting a very good reception among most people we've mentioned it to. In fact a few have thought I was winding them up & laughed themselves silly until realizing I was serious. Please tell me what you think.

Shay short for Seamus is fine.

Claire236 · 14/06/2009 08:34

Thanks for all the replies. We intend on actually calling him Shay. It's derived from a Gaelic name which might be the same name Seamus is derived from I don't know but it's a name in its own right. I love it & it's grown on dh, I was just worried about saddling my son with a name that would mean he gets picked on at school.

He will get picked on, but there again kids will always find something about other kids to poke fun at so if its not the name it will be something else.

If you like it go for it but do be prepared for alot of people asking what its short for or is it a nickname etc...... I would also give him a middle name so he can use that when he grows up if he prefers.

RustyBear · 14/06/2009 09:32

There's a Shaye (with an e) at the school I work at - definitely not picked on, very popular boy, very good-looking (in fact I think he has done some modelling) lovely boy, if a bit mischievous. Don't think he's Irish.

piscesmoon · 14/06/2009 09:40

To give an honest answer-I think it is horrible.

Claire236 · 14/06/2009 18:35

Happy for honest answers piscesmoon, wouldn't have posted here if I wasn't. I'm always a bit bemused by people who ask for opinions then get snotty when they don't get told what they want to hear.

I think it's a great name. Don't see why he'd be picked on. It's not a common name, but not exactly weird or poncey either. Can't imagine it giving problems so that the child would want to change it IMO

Spidermama · 14/06/2009 18:47

I think it's lovely. It works on the stage and in the boardroom too.

TheFallenMadonna · 14/06/2009 18:53

I don't think he'll necessarily get picked on for his name. In fact, I don't think I've ever known a child picked on for their name alone, and I've taught children with some quite outlandish monikers.

piscesmoon · 14/06/2009 19:00

Although I don't like it I know an adult one, and it suits him.

he will be called gay shay all through school

ellingwoman · 14/06/2009 19:51

Know a Shay and like it.

chegirl · 14/06/2009 20:02

I like it. I know a little boy with the name.

I would spell it Che though.

Can you guess why?

I keep meaning to use it for one of mine but it didnt go with the other names.

I did use it for a cat though.

Nicki10 · 14/06/2009 20:07

I know a Shay and I think it is a lovely name, he is from Nigeria and it really suits him. In fact he is very very lovely and masculine! Don't tell DH I said that though!

Claire236 · 15/06/2009 17:15

Lots more positive comments, thanks very much. We've decided to ignore anyone who says anything negative & call him Shay anyway. It's interesting the different nationalities who use the name as I was only aware of the Irish connection.

MissSunny - I took hullygully to mean she thought it sounded like a gypsy name. Not that that's a lot better mind you.

I know a Nigerian Shai too and he is gorgeous !

LackingNicknameInspiration · 15/06/2009 20:02

I love the name Shay, although this could be because I'm a Newcastle United fan and our keeper (who sadly left to go to Man City) is called Shay. He's also the ROI keeper.

Glad you've decided to go for it - as others have said, I can see it being a very nice name for a little one as well as a grown man.

yama · 15/06/2009 20:05

The first thing I thought was Shay Given - the Irish goalkeeper. He was at Newcastle for ages but I think he's now at Man City.

I've always liked him and love the name. Go for it!

yama · 15/06/2009 20:07

Just shows how long I take to type - x posts Lacking.

PlentyOToole · 15/06/2009 20:07

my friend's boy is called Che pronounced Shay
thought it was weird to start, but it suited him.

PlentyOToole · 15/06/2009 20:10

nick names not always negative..

Hey Sleepy! Wondering if we both know the same guy lol

For the record the Nigerian Shae/Shai is actually spelt SEYI and yes, it is a very beautiful name (and not just because it's my Mom's name!). It's full meaning is God did this
