dh & I love the name Shay but it's not getting a very good reception among most people we've mentioned it to. In fact a few have thought I was winding them up & laughed themselves silly until realizing I was serious. Please tell me what you think.

Funnily enough I'm a Newcastle supporter & Shay Given was the inspiration for the name. Gutted when he went to Man City mind you

Well in that case, you should DEFINITELY go for it, Claire. And he'll be welcome in any bar on Tyneside for years to come (and rightly so!)

Hi

I went to school with a girl whose gorgeous older brother was called Shay, not sure if it is the name or the good looking man I remember, but if you like it go with it.

Claire236 · 17/06/2009 18:07

I'll always be a fan of Shay Given no matter who he plays for. I met him once & he was lovely (in my totally unbiased opinion)

I've heard similar things from school friends of mine who are still based in the NE, Claire - haven't been lucky enough to meet him myself, though! In all seriousness though, if your little boy eventually asks about the name, won't it be good to have such a good role model to point to. Was also gutted when he went, but he'll be one of the few who won't get a hard time when he goes back - most people would have gone ages ago after all he went through!!

missmem · 18/06/2009 12:42

I think it sounds chavvy - sorry!

MrsMattie · 18/06/2009 13:54

Much prefer Chey, but it's OK. I know a Shay, but he's about 35 yrs old.

goomum · 18/06/2009 14:03

Curious what's chavvy about it?

Paolosgirl · 18/06/2009 14:06

If you have to ask, goomum....

missmem · 18/06/2009 14:11

Was going to say the same Paolosgirl!

noddyholder · 18/06/2009 14:12

It is spelt shea isn't it?

pagwatch · 18/06/2009 14:13

I am Irish but oh god noooo.

I suspect you can get away with it if you look and sound Irish but otherwise..

But plenty of people on here seem to like it so I am happy to be wrong

pedalmonster · 18/06/2009 14:28

Yeah - sorry - I think it sounds like he will be wearing a hoodie and his jeans round his knees. sorry.
hully loved the comment about the caravan and horse - i laughed so hard I peed a little!

Paolosgirl · 18/06/2009 14:31

LOL pedal!! It does conjure up a certain picture, doesn't it

Alishanty · 18/06/2009 14:59

I know a little one who spells it Shae and an adult who spells it Che. If you like it, go for it. I wouldn't bother mentioning potential names to anyone in RL as you are always going to get some negative comments.

RubyLove1 · 18/06/2009 16:18

I love the name Shay for a boy, and always wanted that name if I ever had a baby boy, then I met my fiance and his cousin is called Che (pronounced the same) so now its a no-no

MaggieBee · 18/06/2009 16:26

I like it as a nn for Seamus. But shay, is, um.... well it's not really Irish is it, it's McIrish. Which is ok. But SEamus on the birth cert is a lot classier. If you don't care about that ignore me!

MaggieBee · 18/06/2009 16:33

oh such snobbery, I've laughing too hard to disapprove

I think in answer to the why is it the c word question....

names like shannon and delaney and shay are not really Irish, they're taken up by people of mixed and Irish extraction, who don't REALLY know anymore what's Irish. These names have a 'fake' flavour which isn't classy.

HOPE that makes sense and doesn't offend too many people.

How about somehting a bit more classic, like Diarmuid or Oisin??

Claire236 · 18/06/2009 21:15

I'm amazed the word chavvy took so long to come up as it seems to be used to describe any name people don't like on here.

I'm not looking for an Irish name particularly I just like the name Shay. I think names like Diarmuid & Oisin are really pretentious if you're not actually Irish.

Can't see the point of putting Seamus on the birth certificate if I've got no intention of ever using it. In fact one of the things I wanted is a name that can't be shortened to anything else.

MaggieBeau · 18/06/2009 21:31

Yeah but at least they're nice!

The only Shay I know has a sister called Neveah... that tells me too much.

But good luck!

Paolosgirl · 18/06/2009 22:16

No, not all names that are disliked are described as chavvy.......

Cadelaide · 18/06/2009 22:22

It's a bit like a ....well.....just a sound to me.

Like if you trip up and stumble and swear a bit but mess up your words. Or if someone made a grab for your bag and you sort of shouted "hey" and "shit!" at the same time.

Am I over-thinking this one?

Paolosgirl · 18/06/2009 22:33

Yep - but you're spot on

missmem · 18/06/2009 23:05

I don't think all names are Chavvy but some mentioned in the other threads hit the top of the chavometer!

Diarmuid is so not pretentious - pretty common in a non-chavvy way though. I could give you pretentious!
