Be honest (and yet gently positive) about my granny names please...

Ok - I'm 38 weeks now and we are no closer to deciding on a name for DC2 - a girl.

I like slightly old lady names. DH is boring more conventional.

Please slag off discuss our shortlist - most of which are mine I have to confess.

Florence - my granny's name. I love it but not mad on the nick-names.
Martha - I really love this and would go well with our surname and DS's name. DH not so keen.
Edith - shortened to Edie. DH likes this best of the granny names, but I am not so sure.
Erin - not in the same granny category at all. DH likes - I think it's OK but I don't love it.

Oh gawd - please help us decide. Have a glass of wine and be as brutal as you like (whilst bearing in mind that I am very hormonal and easily moved to sobbing).

im due in 2 wks and am trying to choose names! dont know the sex but have my heart set on Veronica Rose at the mo, though it could change i suppose! One of my friends called her dd Dorothy and another has a Florence Elise.

josette · 22/05/2009 21:08

If my ds had been a girl, then my actual grandmas' names would have been used...
Beatrice Nell.
I love names like that.

bodiddly · 22/05/2009 21:25

how about Eva Beatrice .. could be Evie Bea .. a bit like your Edie?

hester · 22/05/2009 21:40

Martha and Edith both lovely.

Have you considered Ada?

hellymelly · 22/05/2009 21:45

I love Florence,it just sounds so beautiful.I like Edith too but I know a lot of Ediths so if that would bother you, then maybe one of the others.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 22/05/2009 21:49

Florence - dd's great-granny's name, hence her second name. Didn't like it as a first name when first heard it few years ago as I connected with the city. Now I like.
Martha - not so keen.
Edith - so so
Erin - a super favourite of mine, Dh didn;t like.

Dilettante · 22/05/2009 21:50

Sorry! I should have been more diplomatic In my defence it has very bad vibes for me due to horrid family stuff but I should have noted your request for gentle but honest opinions.

blametheparents · 22/05/2009 21:51

Martha is my favourite

troutpout · 22/05/2009 21:52

Love Granny names !
Edith is gorgeous
Florence is nice
Not keen on Erin... sorry...not in the same granny league in my opinion

Iris is my current fave

OOhhhh no definitely not Martha...you don't want to be doing that !!!!

(dd is gonna be like the Tracey of the future at this rate!)

cupofteaplease · 22/05/2009 21:57

Mabel is my favourite old lady name. (My own little Mabel turns 2 next month )

From your choices I like Florence- Flossie for short, or Edith only because I like Edie.

I have a Martha! And Florence was on my short list too, clearly you have good taste

I like Edith as well, although it makes me think of Edith Bowman, who I loathe.

I agree that Erin is a bit 'weak'.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 22/05/2009 21:59

I love love love Florence I am tucking that one away for future reference

fruitstick · 22/05/2009 21:59

Florence, Martha and Edith were all on my list! Love them.

Elsie was top of my list.

Marthasmama · 22/05/2009 22:00
  • Dorothy is nice too though.
fruitstick · 22/05/2009 22:00

btw - I have 2 DS so have to live vicariously through the baby girl name threads

NorkilyChallenged · 22/05/2009 22:00

Love them all though I do know at least one of each among my acquiantances aged under 3... if you care about that.

I love Elsie and DD2 was very very very nearly Elspeth, nn Elsie.

piscesmoon · 22/05/2009 22:02

Florence-especially if it was your grandmother's name. Martha nice. I don't like Edith or Erin. I have never met an old lady called Elsie who liked her name!

plimple · 22/05/2009 22:02

Lovely choices, wait and see what she's like for suitability.

NorkilyChallenged · 22/05/2009 22:03

Ooh also meant to say that we named DD1 after my grandmother and I'm so so glad we did, it's lovely to know that the name comes from there and especially now that my grandmother is no longer with us

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 22/05/2009 22:06

oooh Elspeth

latermater · 22/05/2009 22:10

Adore Martha but we have a "th" in surname so it would just have sounded as if you had a lisp. DD still got it as a middle name though... go for it!

Marthasmama · 22/05/2009 22:10

Elspeth - Lovely lovely lovely. DH didn't like it but I mentioned that name as one I loved.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 22/05/2009 22:12

DD is Edith/Edie

Also love Florence and Martha, not sure on Erin
