Be honest (and yet gently positive) about my granny names please...

Ok - I'm 38 weeks now and we are no closer to deciding on a name for DC2 - a girl.

I like slightly old lady names. DH is boring more conventional.

Please slag off discuss our shortlist - most of which are mine I have to confess.

Florence - my granny's name. I love it but not mad on the nick-names.
Martha - I really love this and would go well with our surname and DS's name. DH not so keen.
Edith - shortened to Edie. DH likes this best of the granny names, but I am not so sure.
Erin - not in the same granny category at all. DH likes - I think it's OK but I don't love it.

Oh gawd - please help us decide. Have a glass of wine and be as brutal as you like (whilst bearing in mind that I am very hormonal and easily moved to sobbing).

Love Edith, think its so classic Victorian. Someone mentioned Ada (Adaline?) and also Violet - also very beautiful names. DO you like Evelyn? Shortened to Eve or Evie or even Eva? Also, Elise is lovely. Or even Alys (French spelling of Alice)...

juneybean · 22/05/2009 22:25

I love Edith and Erin.

pointydog · 22/05/2009 22:35

Florence - don't like it. on any level.

Martha - nice, comforting, a little dowdy

Edith - I like Edie a lot and I like the sound of Edith, although it does have frumpy connotations depite the dj

Erin - I really like the sound of it, good strong name

Rolf · 22/05/2009 22:44

I love Florence. We were thinking of it for DD2 but were put off because we don't like Flossie or Flo (makes me think of Heavy Flow). I like Florrie though.

I love Edith and Edie.

Not so sure about Martha. On the wrong child it could be awful, too heavy.

Like Erin but it's a bit of an odd-one-out on your list isn't it?

I have a Theodora .

I liked Agnes, Jemima, Matilda, Elizabeth (Betsy), Bridget, Alice, Clara. Can't remember what else. We had a great book with the most popular names in the US and UK in the 1870s and all our favourite names were on the list!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 22/05/2009 22:46

Dorothy

Also love Theodora (not sucking up honest Rolf)
Mable
Maud
DS was going to be Agnes
Jocelyn
Mary
Iris

I know a few people who have used Florence, and I don't like the nicknames at all. I do know one happy Flossie, but she's called that because of her hair (and it's a family nick name only). Martha I think is/is going to be very popular because of Dr Who. I've heard it on the baby names threads a lot. I'm not too keen personally. I don't like Erin too much, so I'd pick Edie, which I rather like, although not so keen on Edith.

sophieandbelly · 23/05/2009 06:36

love martha very pretty
like florence -my friend has a florence (flossie)

dont like edith but edie is ok

like erin but bit boring.

oh go with martha its so cute x

mutti21 · 23/05/2009 06:55

My goddaughter is florence (3) and i think it's beautiful!

My DD is Ada (middle name Beatrice). When i told my mum her name she said "Oh... I like Beatrice". It suits our beautiful little minx and always gets areaction but not always good. Can't say i give 2 hoots about anyone else's opinion though. I'd rather my child were individual than yet another Chloe or Erin (that's an over subscribed name in playgroups in my opinion at the moment).

I also like:

Tessa
Nell
Betty/Betsy

and Earnest for a boy!

weepootle · 23/05/2009 11:17

How about Effie instead of Edith?

jellybeans · 23/05/2009 11:54

Only like Erin, not keen on 'old lady' names.

iMissEdith · 23/05/2009 11:59

Call her Enid.

FairLadyRantALot · 23/05/2009 12:03

Florence - a lovely name, but I agree the short versions are not as pleasant, although, I suppose Flo wouldn't be to terrible, lol
Martha - I don't really like it that much, tbh....but I know it is a very fashoinable name right now
Edith - don't like it, despite knowing a very gorgeous young woman that has this name...
Erin- reallly don't like it

The loveliest old ladies name, in my opinion is Ivy

Or how about:
Estelle
Elisabeth
Daphne
Lily

SOLOisMeredithGrey · 23/05/2009 12:07

Florence can be shortend to Florrie/Flora. Quite nice IMO. I love Erin and artha is nice. Perhaps you'll just know what her name is when she is born? My Dd was nameless for 3 weeks!

magbags · 23/05/2009 13:15

My dd's middle name is Florence so I am a bit biased . She was named after my Gran and I love it as a first name too. Of your choices I would definetley vote for Florence. Really not too keen on Erin tbh.

luvoneson · 23/05/2009 13:26

Erin is nice. Dont like the others, sound like right old girl names.

MsMaggieBeauregarde · 23/05/2009 15:27

Florence - love Flora but not Florence, although I do like Beatrice. FLorence is just OK thouhg.
Martha - beautiful. Quite refined.

Edith - I like this. Edie is lovely too.
Erin - horrible, hate it, hate it. Makes me think of 3rd generation American girl whose parents didn't realise that Erin is synonymous with a packet soup in Ireland. Edel is a nice Irish name reminds me of Edith, wdyt?

Quiltedrose · 23/05/2009 20:21

I love Florence but only in its unshortened form - I don't like 'Flo' or 'Florrie' which is why we haven't picked it as 'our' name. I love Martha - it's a bit Little HOuse on the Prairie-ish!

Not keen on Edith or Erin.

Finona · 24/05/2009 01:23

Out of your choices, I like Martha best. I'd never though of this as a name, but if I had another DD (which I won't } I'd consider it.

I could never have called a DD after one of my grandmothers - Annabina. Really.
The other one I could mange - Ruth.

Good luck choosing!

mamas12 · 24/05/2009 01:36

Martha is not an old lady name!!
It's a beautiful girls name.
A real old lady's name that I think hyou should present to your dh is Lettice.

Finona · 24/05/2009 01:39

mange??? Manage even.

jabberwocky · 24/05/2009 01:47

My grandmother's name was Edith I like the nickname Edie and of course there was the wonderful Edith Head.

sleepyhead3 · 24/05/2009 08:34

Florence/ Flora is v pretty. There are also lots of other lovely 'granny name' suggestions on here if you are still stuck!

pranma · 24/05/2009 09:11

how about Connie[Constance]

BottySpottom · 24/05/2009 12:23

I love them all except Erin. Erin seems a tiny bit hard and cold to me and I think a child would have to be pretty and girly to overcome that.

tomsmom2003 · 24/05/2009 21:35

Alfred or Edward ? Emma or Elizabeth ? (see my "E" leanings there....!)
