bargainhuntingbetty · 19/05/2009 13:39

morningpaper · 19/05/2009 13:39

Susannah - annoying spelling
Beatrice - fine
Verity - fine
Elizabeth - good

Dominic - good
Nathan(iel) - good

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 19/05/2009 13:40

Oh God, I've picked some really dullski names haven't I?

Suzanna? Not sure how else I'd spell it.

Poledra · 19/05/2009 13:40

I quite lke them all except Beatrice. I would suggest you think about what they can be shortened to, and if you can put up with that, if you want to cut your list down. I have to keep reminding my 5 yo DD not to shorten her friend's lovely name to its less lovely abbreviation

littleboyblue · 19/05/2009 13:41

I like Elizabeth and Patrick

Cadelaide · 19/05/2009 13:44

Elizabeth and Michael are loathsome (well you did ask!).

Anyway, they're all fairly ghastly except Verity which is pretty and Edward which is perfect.

Cadelaide · 19/05/2009 13:45

I have an unreasonable distaste for the name Elizabeth. I really can't stand it.

Anyway, enough about me.......

wotulookinat · 19/05/2009 13:46

Samantha is a nice name. I know a nice Samantha.

Lydia I don't like. I went to school with a nasty one and I think it is pretentious because she was!

Susannah is ok. I can't decide if I think it's boring or classically nice.

Beatrice is a no no no! Very pretentious because of the royal family connection.

Verity is quite an ugly sounding name, I think, and makes me think of horsey women

Elizabeth is nice. Plain but classic and will suit anyone.

Dominic is good. It's kind of a 'cool' name.

Nathan(iel) is fine too.

Jonathan is my DH's name. I think it's under-used these days.

Edward is a favourite of mine.

Patrick is good if you are Irish.

Michael is awful. It's my FIL's name so a huge NO from me!

LisaandLilia · 19/05/2009 14:08

Lydia is my favourite girl name. It's lovely. And I like Dominic, Nathan and Edward the best.

Tommy · 19/05/2009 14:11

Lydia and Susannah were what we were going to call the DSs - so they are my number one names

I like Dominic and Jonathan.

The others are all fine too but not my faves

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 19/05/2009 14:26

See, now you're getting better at being a bit critical

Soph73 · 19/05/2009 14:39

Have only read OP and can honestly say that I wouldn't go for any of your girls names - and I have a cousin called Verity However, that's probably because I have 2 boys and won't be having any more so not something I have to worry about

Do like, Nathan and Patrick for boys names.

MadameCastafiore · 19/05/2009 14:40

Think they are all a bit dire - other than Verity and Dominic.

wuglet · 19/05/2009 14:43

Hate Verity - only because I knew a particularly drippy specimen once - was working with children at the time and a few of them called her "Ferretty" (is that how you would spell it? - looking like a ferret anyway!)

sorry to any mums of Verities - I did think it was a pretty name before I met her!

Most of the other names are OK though.

EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 19/05/2009 14:43

Dire??

And here was I thinking they were all wonderful... Better get my hinking cap on before I go any further then

OP posts:
beautifulbubbles · 19/05/2009 14:58

I like Edward because I love love love Ted (and quite like Ned)

I like Nathanial shoterned to Nate

But I'm not keen on the rest - sorry eyeballs

sockmonster · 19/05/2009 15:07

Well, you asked for criticism!

Right here goes:

Samantha- NO! Really 80's, so so over
Lydia- nice. I like
Susannah- nice, without the h, like the nn susie
Beatrice- fergie/mccartney associations, sounds a bit pompous
Verity- can't see many nicknames. Don't think I'd like a girl named Verity. No idea why!
Elizabeth- Classic, but hate 'liz'

Dominic- nice
Nathan(iel)- lovely
Jonathan- NO!!! John? Jonathan Ross? NO
Edward- classic, underused, lovely
Patrick- too Irish, even if you are I don't like it I think of a drunken red leprechaun (sp?)
Michael- um, a bit like samantha. I don't think it matters if your surname starts with M I don't see the problem there, I just hate the abbreviation 'mike'..eeugh. Michael in full is OK.

Paolosgirl · 19/05/2009 15:11

Samantha - No!! Too eighties
Lydia - No! Lid ee a teapot
Susannah - OK
Beatrice - Like (but Maddog Mills has spoiled it a bit)
Verity - Like
Elizabeth - Lke

Like all the boys names apart from Michael and Partick. Too seventies.
