I went to school (and Uni) with a Merlin (same one, not 2 of them). Despite whatever I think of him, I like the name.

Also know an Utha.

paranoidmother · 09/05/2009 22:37

I was going to be a Merlin if my dad had had his own way and I was a boy

Go for it

blinks · 09/05/2009 22:38

i could imagine a Merlin might wear a poncho

KashaSarrasin · 09/05/2009 22:40

I like it but don't think I would have dared use it, DH would have put it on his instant veto list anyway.

Go for it if you're brave enough!

Yip, the Merlin I dated, I was also friends with first (and after) and he really was lovely and attractive.

I think you accept a person's name as you find them. Well, you don't meet someone and say, ' Sorry?? Your name's FARQUAR?? Oh no, I'm sorry, I can't possibly speak to you or befriend you with a name like that...!"

DitaVonCheese · 09/05/2009 23:44

I was at uni with a Merlin too - how many can there be? Mine was short, sweet, quite attractive and unbelievably rich.

Thunderduck · 10/05/2009 13:22

Don't do it. It's too cruel and it's an awful name.

Slickbird · 10/05/2009 19:12

Don't think mine was rich. If he had been, I might have been more inclined to put up with the smelly feet!

Tidey · 10/05/2009 19:17

Okay, first reaction images in my mind: Beardy hairy wizard, or a bloke who thinks he's all mystical cos he goes to Glastonbury.

Either that or the ghost elder sister of Caleb in American Gothic, although I think it was spelled Merlyn.

MrsMattie · 10/05/2009 19:18

We had a weird gothic boy in our class at school called Merlin and he was just the absolute stereotype of this name - a true 'Dungeons and Dragons' playing, Terry Pratchett reading geek (sweet boy, though, actually...)

Don't do it!

NoNickname · 10/05/2009 19:20

657 Merlins were registered in England and Wales between 1995 and 2005.

I know one that's about 55 (female).

Disenchanted3 · 10/05/2009 19:21

LOVE LOVE LOVE it

SoupDragon · 10/05/2009 19:42

I love the name but wouldn't use it.

blametheparents · 10/05/2009 19:55

it is a cat's name

cory · 10/05/2009 19:55

Arthur Pendragon has more class imo.

LetThemEatCake · 10/05/2009 20:09

I love it but got slammed for suggesting it on here a few weeks ago.

Also still love Aslan.

KirstyJC · 10/05/2009 20:14

I like it but what is the surname? Would it go with that? what do you think it would be shortened to?

If it all sounds OK, go with it - he can always change it if he hates it?!?

Takver · 10/05/2009 20:54

I know one who is perfectly normal (20ish bloke).

I guess shortening would be Merle.

cazinski · 11/05/2009 13:34

Errrr...what? Merlin? Hahahahahahahahaaaaaaa, you're not serious are you?

Fimbo · 11/05/2009 13:36

Is it not the name of one of Lowry Turner's sons?

lastboxoftampons · 11/05/2009 15:48

Tidey - LOL! Unfortunately, it conjurs up visions of a geeky teenage boy who has adopted it as his name for extended sessions of online D&D or role playing weekends out by Stonehenge. Sorry But if you love it....go for it!

barnpot · 11/05/2009 16:03

I love it if i got my way my son would have been called that but dh put his foot down we now have an elliot xx

SweetGeorgiaBrown · 11/05/2009 18:32

It just reminds me of a horse that my friend owned. Kids can be cruel and they dont need ammo like that at school.
