Old lady names.......

Babylove502 · 08/05/2009 17:51

I really like old lady type names.

My favourite is Elsie (I'm thinking Elsie May)

Also on the list is

Olive (olly for nn)
Ethel
Mabel
Iris
Millicent
Bessie.

Other names I like are

Delilah or Lila (Rose as a mn)
Cedar
Willow
Alyssa (Lissy for nn)
Orli
Phoebe

Let me know what you think? Are they all silly or do you like any of them.I quite like the idea a name that can be shortened or have a good nn!

Thanks

It's Lettice.

jellybeans · 08/05/2009 17:53

Alyssa is nice, not keen on old lady names but Evelyn is OK.

FrankMustard · 08/05/2009 17:54

Might be teased about Aunt Bessie's dumplings at school, though...
Phoebe is nice, and Millicent, although she would probably be shortened to Milly and there are a million Millys around at the moment!
What about Maeve?

lastboxoftampons · 08/05/2009 17:54

I love, love, love Lila but it doesn't go with our surname! Also like Alyssa. Other than that, I'm not really an old lady name type of girl!

TitsalinaBumsquash · 08/05/2009 17:55

I love Delilah and i will consider it if i have ever have a DD.

Mu first choice for a DD has always been Phoebe.

belgo · 08/05/2009 17:55

at Lettuce.

May is one of the most popular second names, it really adds nothing to name name Elsie.

What about
Maisie
Molly
Edith

NotSoRampantRabbit · 08/05/2009 17:56

I also love the old lady name thing.

DD due any day now. DH and I at war over names.

You might like to add Edith (Edie) to your granny list! Tis one of my current faves.

Also:

Martha
Florence
Agnes

DH likes Zoe. We will never agree!

MrsHappy · 08/05/2009 17:57

I like Olive, Iris and (strangely) Millicent. Bessie is short for Elizabeth and I prefer Elizabeth (also shortens to Eliza, Beth, Betty etc).

Not keen on the other list, especially Alyssa, but that's because I lived in the US in the 80s where every other girl was an -Issa.

rusmum · 08/05/2009 18:14

I LOVE olive

May and Rose VERY popular missle names (i have both )

rubyslippers · 08/05/2009 18:15

Pearl

LynetteScavo · 08/05/2009 18:22

I was goping to say Elsie - I think it's lovely.

I like Edith (Edie)

Pearl I like but not one of my favourites.

Martha and Florence are very popular, there are loads at school round here.

I like millicent because it reminds me of my favourite book when I was younger. Milly-Molly-Mandy (short for Millicent Margeret Amanda). But there are so many millys.

I like maisie but that is my nn and would kind of feel like Im naming the child after me which I don't really want.

Ethel is dreadful. All the others on your list are nice though.

Other old lady names you might like:

Hilda
Margaret
Mildred
Enid
Irene
Vera
Maud
Winifred
Queenie

Babylove502 · 08/05/2009 18:32

Also like maude and mildred (but again that will get shortened to millie).

Im sure Elsie is my favourite out of the lot, the more I say it the more it grows on me.

Doe Elsie Mabel flow? Im not sure it does, cos I like May for the middle name but its very popular. Sure name Begins with M and 2 syllables!

I like Vera (maybe for a Middle name) it was my much loved grandmothers name. Think it would make my mum cry everytime she heard it so not sure about using for a first name!

How about Euphemia? Effie for short. I could never convince DH on it, so someone else might as well get it.

Tidey · 08/05/2009 18:42

Just found some more:

Nellie
Alma

Gladys
Dorothy
Pearl
