Would love to use this name wondered what people thought of using Noah for a girl?

( I know it's typically a boys name but my SIL's best friend has a daughter called Noah and i've always loved it!)

As DD would say "No-a!"

kittywise · 30/04/2009 20:15

eh?

livvyanddaisymummy · 30/04/2009 20:17

That's a Resounding no then! Thanks for the opinions everyone. Don't want people to think she is a boy. Probably choose Ella now!!

No, no, no, no, no! I really feel for people who have unisex names as it is, let alone people with names from the wrong sex!

dizzydixies · 30/04/2009 20:45

my DD3 has a name more commonly used for a boy and I've had all the boring usual comments about it

I've also had loads of compliments as she is a lovely wee thing and has really made the name her own

we gave her a formal first name and used her known name as her middle name so there would be no confusion re post/forms etc

you could have something like Isabella Noah so that if you felt Noah wasn't quite right you'd have Ella to fall back on

both lovely names imo and you should use what you love or you'll regret it, I had wanted to use it for DD2's name and DH said no, it was him who suggested it for DD3

good luck with whatever you chose

Noa is a hebrew female name. I think it's lovely but would be hard to pull off over here.

Bit of a long shot but Noelia is a beautiful Spanish name?

ilovemydogandMrObama · 30/04/2009 20:46

I know a few Jewish girls named 'Noa' - love it.

Jaypickle · 30/04/2009 20:47

Ah-no.
How about Nyah?

Hulababy · 30/04/2009 20:50

I know a girl called Nia - is that near enough?

8oreighty · 30/04/2009 20:52

Noa is a girl's name I've heard of...Noah can only ever be a boy's name...she will spend her whole life with everyone thinking she's a boy and you explaining...Noah was an old man...old testament, not good for a little girl

Pineapples · 30/04/2009 22:21

There was also a woman in the bible named Noah, as well as the man named Noah. It's a 'legit' unisex name. It's pretty.

Noah is lovely ..... for a boy!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 30/04/2009 23:52

Nellie

Clary · 30/04/2009 23:57

Ahem.

Noah is not a girl's name. It's like calling a boy Alice.

frisbyrat · 01/05/2009 00:17

I have taught a girl called Noah, about ten years ago. A boarding school, with a fair proportion of students from the pacific rim, many of whom fr some reason chose "western" names for school use. So we had a Lily, a Michelle, and a Noah in this one class. She was a lovely girl.

But it's still a bloody odd name for a lass.

chaya5738 · 03/05/2009 13:17

Noa is a Hebrew girls name and is beautiful. It is Yitzak Rabin's granddaughter's name (the one who gave the wonderful speech at his funeral). It is also the name of the perfume : ) There are loads of girls called Noa.

Grrrr...I get annoyed at all the posters asserting that it is only a boy's names. Truly, if people are going to be so emphatic please get your facts straight. Once again, it demonstrates Mumsnet's parochialism.

Lulumama · 03/05/2009 13:19

I know a female Noa, of jewish heritage

chaya5738 · 03/05/2009 13:21

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOA

suwoo · 03/05/2009 13:32

I also know a female Noa of Jewish heritage. Miley Cyrus' sister is called Noa dontcha know . My DS is also called Noah

spicemonster · 03/05/2009 13:36

chaya - it's not parochial to say that Noah is a boy's name. It is. Noa is a girl's name. It's not parochial to say that Oliver is a boy's name and Olivia is a girl's - it's just a fact.

OP - call your daughter Noa by all means, I think it's a very pretty name. But don't call her Noah. That just makes you look ignorant.

chaya5738 · 03/05/2009 13:41

Well the posters seemed to say that it was a boy's names without qualifying that assertion by noting that the OP had spelt it incorrectly and that there was in fact a girl's name of Noa. The name is usually pronounced the same in English (whether it is Noa or Noah) and they appeared (to me at least) be ruling out the name for a girl completely regardless of the spelling.

I agree that it should be spelt Noa not Noah (it has a completely different spelling in Hebrew also).

Zelophehad had a daughter called Noah but then he also had a daughter called Hoglah

PestoSunshineMonster · 03/05/2009 14:25

Miley Cyrus has a nine year old sister called Noah. I read it in

this article

I quite like it

Kwini · 03/05/2009 16:04

Oh PLEASE don't call her Ella - she'll be one of at least 25 at her school!

(Just thought I'd try the MN-style begging statement to see what it feels like. Not impressed, actually).

Noa is lovely.
