Noah for a girl?

Would love to use this name wondered what people thought of using Noah for a girl?

( I know it's typically a boys name but my SIL's best friend has a daughter called Noah and i've always loved it!)

Don't do it. Ella much better.

chaya5738 · 03/05/2009 16:16

I am not sure how we got on to Ella but it is way too common. It seems like every second person who has just had a daughter has called her Ella.

I am still pushing for Noa : ) Such a beautiful name.

RoseOfTheOrient · 03/05/2009 16:20

Noa is also a (non-traditional) girl's name in Japan.

jabberwocky · 03/05/2009 16:21

Noa is a feminine Hebrew name. Makes me think of the wonderful Israeli singer. Her given name is Achinoam Nini but she performs as Noa.

edam · 03/05/2009 16:53

'Noa' may well be a Hebrew girls' name but the OP's child is growing up in this country where the sound is commonly associated with Noah, a boys' name. Will be a real pain in the bum her whole life.

People have trouble even with those names or nicknames that are known to be unisex (my mother is a Pat, hardly an uncommon female name, yet has frequent problems). Seems a bit unfair on the poor lass to give her a name you know full well will cause problems.

jabberwocky · 03/05/2009 17:12

Just noticed I am not the first to point out its Hebrew origins. There may be people in the UK who don't know of this but that's no reason to bow to the common denominator of ignorance about it. As lulumama and others have noted there are other girls named Noa around.

livvyanddaisymummy · 03/05/2009 18:19

Thank you everyone. I had heard 'Noah' in the bible for a daughter of Zelophehad so thought it was okay to spell as 'Noah'!

May have to rethink for Noa though it looks funny without the 'h'!!

I still like Ella too, i wasn't aware of it's popularity. Neither of my DDs have any friends called Ella but times must have changed since mine were born!

Love the name Noah - but for a boy.

I think Noa and/or Noor are REALLY pretty names for a little girl (Noor made our shortlist for ds had he been a dd). I definitely prefer them over Ella - they seem to be everywhere these days along with combinations and variations of May/Mae/Mai.

jabberwocky · 03/05/2009 18:47

Yes, Noah spelling deffo boy.

Nice name, but definitely without the H for a girl

jabberwocky · 03/05/2009 21:05

how about Norah?

sophieandbelly · 04/05/2009 11:10

mmm iam all for something diff but do think this is bit to much of a boys name!

chaya5738 · 04/05/2009 16:22

The boys name "Noah" should actually be pronounced "Noach" (with a gutteral "ch" sound). Whereas the girls name "Noa" is pronounced how people in England pronounce "Noah." So when people say that Noa/h is a boys name they are actually the ones who are wrong. People in England have been calling their sons by a girls names - the equivalent of calling them Olivia rather than Oliver (as the earlier poster noted).

Given how up-in-arms people on this forum get about mispronunciation of Irish and Scottish names I think it is funny that this has slipped everyone by.

cheekster · 04/05/2009 19:37

No, definately dont use it for a girl!

hazeyjane · 04/05/2009 19:38

I think it is lovely.

piscesmoon · 04/05/2009 19:44

You could put an 'r'in the middle and have Norah.

PrammyMammy · 06/05/2009 20:59

We have a Noah, he's a boy though.

no - not for a girl, lovely for a boy

lisalisa · 06/05/2009 21:10

It's Noa which is an Israeli name. I know a few kids with the name and it suits them - kind of quirky and cute.
