Please help me convince DH

I love Edward shortedned to Ted. DH has been saying Edward is too posh for us and will not consider it.

Last night he said the real reason he wont have Edward is because he thinks it will be shortened to Eddie which he hates.

Can you help me convince him that he will not become an Eddie if he is always known as Ted?

Do you have an Edward or know one that isnt called Eddie and do you think that an Edward is destined to bedcome an Eddie?

I think that any Edward will, at some point, be called Eddie. Whether it sticks or not will depend on whether your child (not you, not your dh) likes it.

Having said this, if you preemptively shorten it to Ted then Eddie is unlikely to stick- it would be more of a problem if you wanted to use Edward I think. I know a Ted and it has never occurred to me to call him anything else.

This isn't going to help you but IME you can't choose what nicknames your kids end up with.

I was always known as my full name until I went to uni then because my house mates already knew someone by that name I was christened Lottie by them, a name that I really hated until that point. My parents also don't like hearing me called that which is a shame because everyone calls me that now.

However, if you introduce yourself as Ted how can that possibly be changed? There aren't any sounds in there that can be used as an alternated name.

Just tell him hes called Edward, if he complains state its ultimatly your descision because you have to give birth,if he wants an equal imput then he can try and shove a lemon up his japsy whilst you give birth, if he manages to do it you will reconsider.

Ted is also nickname for Theodore.

I have an Edward known as Ned. His sister does call him Eddie though - sorry!

Your child could end up with a nickname completely unrelated to his actual name. You cannot control what will happen at school.

I dislike the name Tilly intensely and it is the most common abbreviation of my dd's name. Everybody warned that she would be called Tilly. So far, nope, nobody calls her Tilly. I put my foot down at the beginning and she has never been known as that. It might happen one day but she is known by the name we use for her. If anybody accidentally uses Tilly, dd looks blankly and says 'no, my name is...'

mu DH is Adam... he gets called Eddie.

Only Edwards I know are known as Ed. Does that abbreviation annoy him as well as Eddie?

People do shorten names (uninvited!) and I think Ed/Eddie are more commonly used abbreviations than Ted.

I think we'll probably end up jut calling him Ted and forgetting Edward then

All the Edward's I know are called Ed, Eddie or Edward.

The only Ted I know is a Theodore.

Yes, many, many people are likely to call him Eddie if you go for Edward.

i do not think that an Edward is destined to become an Eddie.
if people only ever know him as Edward or Ted then that's what they'll call him.

dp is Robert, and he HATES Rob. no-one has ever called him it because if they do he tells them not to. but they rarely do because he is only ever introduced as Robert or Bob- and why would you start calling someone by a name that they haven't even told you is theirs??

I wanted to have an Edward but I don't like any of the shortened forms, so we didn't.You have to bear in mind that your DS might like Eddie when he gets older.

I agree with all the posters who have said that you can call him one thing, but when he gets to school /uni /football club they may well call him something totally different.

My db is Peter to family, but Pete to his friends and girlfriend. That's just how it is. We'd never ever call him Pete.

Edward nn Ted is nice.

Ted is fine as a short name. Most names which are popular now are from longer names originally.
