Sheeta · 03/04/2009 20:24

Um, Anne-marie?

Northernlurker · 03/04/2009 20:26

I'm not that keen - do you have a meaning or cultural context for it?

mommyinthemiddle · 03/04/2009 20:28

No just like it!

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 03/04/2009 20:31

Is it something you've made up then?

ramonaquimby · 03/04/2009 20:31

do you mean like Amy Ray?

it's awful

ZZZen · 03/04/2009 20:34

sorry to be ignorant but is it a name you have created because I have never heard of it before? Have only heard of Amara.

If it is an established name , I think I would take the most frequent spelling of it, since it is unusual in itself. If it a new invention so to speak , I think just take the one that looks best to you. They would all be pronounced the same I think.

I don't think I'd go for the spelling "Amerae" though.

pointydog · 03/04/2009 20:34

Why not Amy. Same meaning, I'd wager

Northernlurker · 03/04/2009 20:37

Amadis?

Amaris?

Ameya

pointydog · 03/04/2009 20:38

Amadeus?

rock me, amadeus

GossipMonger · 03/04/2009 20:39

sounds made up to me

dont like it

she will spend her life spelling it and it will wind her up

amy
anne-marie

but not what you have chosen

Imagine when she gets cards from people - not one will spell her name right

Be nice to her and give her something else

solidgoldshaggingbunnies · 03/04/2009 20:39

How about Amenorrhea?

ThePlanningCommittee · 03/04/2009 20:41

Nope - sounds totally made-up and your poor DD will spend her whole life having to spell it out and explain it to people ("what does it mean? erm, nothing, my parents made it up..." )

Amy, Anna Maria, Amelie - these are all good names, so why try and reinvent the wheel?

pointydog · 03/04/2009 20:41

Rocky Amadeus

mommyinthemiddle · 03/04/2009 20:41

It is a name DH thought of, he knew a girl at school called it.
Think we will go with Amarae, thanks everyone for you input
Now for the middle name!

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 03/04/2009 20:43

So you are going to give your daughter a name which your dh thought of because it reminded him of a girl at school?

Ok then....

ThePlanningCommittee · 03/04/2009 20:44

What - everyone's input saying "FOR GOD'S SAKE, NO WOMAN!"?

BecauseImWoeufit · 03/04/2009 20:46

Sorry - it's awful

janeite · 03/04/2009 20:47

Not good methinks. Amira is quite a popular name, generally for Muslim girls I have taught over the years, and is much prettier than the ones you've suggested imho.

GossipMonger · 03/04/2009 20:48

Please dont do it

It is chavvy

Not one of us has said this is a nice name or a pretty name but you did ask us what we think of it and we told you!

'Hi. Im Jack. What's your name?'

'Amarae.'

'Hi AnneMarie. Nice to meet you.'

'No - Amarae.'

'Amy-Rae?'

No. Amarae......' and so it will go on......

yuk

ThePlanningCommittee · 03/04/2009 20:57

Damn straight GossipMonger - what's the betting that Amarae will demand to be called 'Jane' as soon as she's old enough to have her own view?

It's times like this I wish I was a Continental:

"France passed a law in the early 1800s that prohibited all names except those on a preapproved list; the last of these laws was repealed in 1993.

"In Germany, the government still bans invented names and names that don't clearly designate a child's sex.

"Sweden and Denmark forbid names that officials think might subject a child to ridicule. Swedish authorities have rejected such names as Veranda, Ikea and Metallica."
