What do you htink of the name Thisbe?
I used to know one 20 years ago and have often thought about it, now it has a bit of meaning to after a rather eventful night out when dh and i went to the theatre to see A Midsummer Nights Dream!
Does it go with Iris, Eli, Pearl and Amos.
I think i am really liking it and i think Thisbe Jean is lovely.
Opinions please!

like Frisbee?

IheartEASTEREGGS · 03/04/2009 13:22

Is it pronounced Frisbee but with a 'th'?

Stretch · 03/04/2009 13:23

Thisbe a joke, no?

tummytickler · 03/04/2009 13:23

Yes, 'frisbee' with a TH instead of a fr.

How do you say it?

Is it pronounced as "this" with a hissy "s" or does it rhyme with frisbee???

Or is the beginning the same sound as in "thin"??

IheartEASTEREGGS · 03/04/2009 13:24

Sounds like someone saying 'frisbee' but with a speech impediment.
Nowhere near as nice as your other childrens names imo

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 03/04/2009 13:24

only if you have a pyramis already.

purpleduck · 03/04/2009 13:24

no , don't

really.

LetThemEatCake · 03/04/2009 13:25

really pretty

but I don't like the middle name sorry. Too, um, bland and dull with such a pretty first name. Something like, I dunno, Isobel, would be better IMO

Stretch · 03/04/2009 13:25

What's a 'bean' Aunty Lulu?? Or are you going to bean your aunty??

Kathyis6incheshigh · 03/04/2009 13:26

If you liked Midsummer Night's Dream, why not Bottom?

IheartEASTEREGGS · 03/04/2009 13:26

How about rounderth instead?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 03/04/2009 13:26

Is it a boys name or a girls? Either way, she/he will get the piss took out of her/him and will be renamed Frisbee, but if you are okay with that, go for it.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 03/04/2009 13:26

Ignore all these philistines(!) I actually know a Thisbe and think it is a gorgeous name for a lovely girl. Be brave!

PrimulaVeris · 03/04/2009 13:27

Wot Strech said

Bettymum · 03/04/2009 13:27

Oh, I like it. The next DS can be Pyramus
Don't know what your surname is but I'm thinking

I like Hebe, but amazingly i know 4 under the age of 10!

I like most mad and unusual names but a) the Frisbee link is just a bit much and b) the actual Thisbe in MND is not someone very inspiring - she's a daft farce character played badly by a terrible actor.

Therefore anyone who doesn't know their Shakespeare will think "Frisbee" and anyone who does will think "wtf?"

The only cool points I can think of is it would be quite edgy to be a teenager nicknamed "This"

muffle · 03/04/2009 13:36

Isn't Hebe pronounced "Heebie" - if that was a child I knew I wouldn't be able to resist calling them heebie-jeebie (affectionately of course)

PrimulaVeris · 03/04/2009 13:36

Am liking idea of twins Thisbe & Hebe

georgimama · 03/04/2009 13:36

It's the name of the piss-take Juliet type character in the play-within-a-play in Midsummer Night's Dream.

Don't do it.

If you like Shakespearean names there are much better ones:

Helena
Hero (love that)
Hermione
Ophelia
Beatrice
Viola
Rosamund
etc
etc
etc

Stretch · 03/04/2009 13:38

Heebie-Jeebie!!!

Sorry but am PMSL..!

I'm very sorry.

Love the name Iris and Amos though!

tummytickler · 03/04/2009 13:40

I know the character is loopy (I was watching the play remember ), but I also knew a girl called Thisbe a very long time ago and she was a very serious, studious type.
The only other Shakepearean name i like is Cordelia.
