If everyone is so offended by this thread, report it. Stop keeping it in active convos by posting on it.

I am aware that I have just posted on it, but then I am not offended by it, and it would be impossible to say "stop posting on it if you don't like it!" without posting on it.

The only name in history that is completely and utterly 'chav'...(which in itself is a very shakey concept because it just meant 'young child' till the DM got hold of it)is Chardonnay...

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:11

Lavender star I agree. I am going to use the name Jayden for my next child if I have a boy.

I have used the name 'chav' on here regarding myself and I have also been called' snobby'

Which one should I be?

I think the word chav is though of as that 14 year old lad who walks around the streets with his 'boys' and maybe called 'jayden' shouting and swearing, riding his monkeybike around and asking people for a fight.

But I also know of 'Snobs' that are called 'Jayden' and are dressed in the golfing shirt and cream trousers reciting the pythagouras theorem.

Todays society is in some parts so demorilised. But i's like to let you know too that a 'chav' can be clever but hide it and a 'snobby' person can be the cocaine addict.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:12

MrsFogi - A lad at my school was called 'Jay' and was a complete 'Chav'!

Blu · 10/03/2009 12:18

My answer to the OP is:
it is judgmental to make any assumptions / value judgements about names. They are all subjective, we all have personal preferences but it is obviously provocative to ask whether a particular name is the ultimate representative of qualities thought to be derogative. As 'chav' is.

You are being disingenous in the way you insist that you have asked a qestion, rather than made a statement. The implication of your question is that if not this name, then some other is the 'no 1 chav name'. Which is judgmental and derogatory. And would be equally judgemental and derogatory if it was 'no 1 ponce name', for e.g.

Personally I think labelling peple as chav is horrible. It is intended as an insulting term, and used as such.

And it all adds up to a horrible thread.

Mumcentreplus · 10/03/2009 12:28

Tarquin is the number one ponce name..hehehe

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:32

btw..gunnerbean

No name is 'chavvy' or 'snobby'. A name is a noun not an adjective.

You can not describe someone by thier name.

When i was younger I was a 'yob' as I rode around on my bike, running people over. You can not simply call me a 'yob' beacuse my name is Michelle.

btw is Michelle chavvy or snobbish???

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:32

Tarquin sounds like a fish...

chaya5738 · 10/03/2009 12:34

Not sure why people get so upset about the word "chav" but then think it is ok to describe a name they don't like as "American."

Actually, I almost fell off my seat when I opened this thread as it is my number one hated named and did hear it yelled down the supermarket aisle just yesterday.

To be honest, if we are going to have to be careful about openly discussing a name lest someone lost a child with that name and might open this thread then we won't end up discussing names at all.

piratecat · 10/03/2009 12:38

i just knewit was going to be that name (runs off)

georgimama · 10/03/2009 12:39

"No name is 'chavvy' or 'snobby'. A name is a noun not an adjective.

Well, actually, if we are going to get technical, nouns are described using adjectives.

Nancy66 · 10/03/2009 12:39

Certain names have certain associations and it's ridiculous to insist that they don't.

No, it doesn't mean you're a toffee nosed aristo if you call your kids Quentin and Jemima and it doesn't mean you're trailer trash if you call your kids Taylor and Maddison - BUT there's no denying that when people hear a name they build a picture.

georgimama · 10/03/2009 12:40

What you mean is that you should not ascribe characteristics to a person, just because of your opinion of their name.

I agree with you.

chaya5738 · 10/03/2009 12:40

btw, of course a name is a noun not an adjective but one can say that a name is "chav-ish" in the same way that one can say it is a "pretty", "nice", or "bad" name. By saying a name is a "chav name" one is describing the name (or noun) rather than saying the name is an adjective.

Blu · 10/03/2009 12:42

Nancy True- and MN is the place to build that sort of prejudiced picture? add to it? Enjoy it by comparing and contrasting the extent to which name provokes the biggest stereotype? Because that adds to the experience of the children named that how?

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:43

'Bus' is a noun
'red' is an adjective

You cant simply say that Using the word 'red' alone describes a bus??

Blu · 10/03/2009 12:43

Better, as Georgiemama suggests, to NOT "ascribe characteristics to a person, just because of your opinion of their name."

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:43

lol georgimama

chaya5738 · 10/03/2009 12:45

Yes:

Person #1: What colour is that bus?
Person #2: Red

Person #1: What do you think of the name Jayden?
Person #2: It is a chav name.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:45

I think we have come to a conclusion

It shouldnt have been started in the first place but has sent the majority back to our English leesons at school.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:46

oops think I need to retake that GCSE ' leesons'

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:47

Chaya - what I meant was simply if I said 'red'
You wouldnt say instantly 'bus' would you?

georgimama · 10/03/2009 12:47

Come over to Pedants' Corner, you'll love it. It's full of people who cane think of nothing better than to debate the difference between and adverb and an adjective.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:48

Buses come in all types of colours nowadays.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:49

'Pedants corner'????? How do I find it????
