its not a poncey name is it? i don't think it is but my other two are ellie and james which are quite solid names [i think anyway] so i want it to sound strong next to them

I think you just have to question whether or not the name you give your child will result in relentless p*-taking. If you think you can get away with it, go for it! If I had a backbone, I would probably name a boy Alfie. Not a bizarre name you'd think, but my DH thinks he would get the wotsit beaten out of him at some point. Hmmph. Thank God we're probably having a girl!

I think it depends on the kind of environment he'll grow up in. DS would get 'a good doin'' as they say round these parts if he was called Hector. If he went to one of the more avant-garde private schools in the city then Hector there would probably be the name equivalent of John elsewhere.

It sounds like a good, strong combination and one that has meaning for you both. Stuff what anyone else thinks. Besides, there are some REALLY atrocious names out there and Hector isn't one of them!

At a place I used to work as a teenager, there was a guy called Hector. He was GORGEOUS! We all used to get all silly when he was around...hence I love the name.

HEctor in the Iliad was tagged as "the last defence of Troy" becuase he was such a shit-hot warrior. He's a great character!
