My friend's youngest DS is called Hector, it's really nice (but I'll admit it took a few days to grow on me)

madwomanintheattic · 07/03/2009 23:31

franca - my fave bit too lol - and i like that he has to take his helmet off because it's scaring the ds. aw. we almost went for hector as a result of the iliad. sigh.

but, not a book thread lol a baby name thread. don't call his sister andromache though, will you? it's a bit of a mouthful.

i knew a baby hector a few years ago. he was a hec. he screamed blue murder (in a cross, decisive way, not an upset, help me way) until he was fed. without fail. every time he got hungry. when he was on solids, his mum had to put the food on the tray before she wedged him in the chair, or do a drop and grab manouevre to reduce the volume levels. the minute food appeared, he shut up. he was hilarious so in view of hector's being strong willed and knowing what they want lol, i'd say go for it. it is a wee bit precocious, but if you move in those circles, he'll fit right in amongst the jocastas lol.

madwomanintheattic · 07/03/2009 23:34

oh, and a small rofl at jasper knowing a hector (but not at the local comp).

themoon66 · 07/03/2009 23:37

Hector - No

William - Yes

Leannabanana · 08/03/2009 08:17

I don't move in particularly 'posh' circles really i dont think.....last three baby boys born i have contact with have been Jensen, Archie and Josiah [Jed]....i think i could 'get away' with Hector in the sense that it is def a strong sounding name and if he really hates it he can always use his initials a la 'there will be blood' H.W....

i am going to read The Iliad as my pregnancy tome and see if that helps....it sounds fascinating...

I know a Tor and an Eros, both after Greek mythology I think.

I like Hector, good strong name.

JaneSeymour · 08/03/2009 08:22

You didn't say Emmett did you

Tell me you didn't

it means ant doesn't it?

Hector over that every time, dear!

TsarChasm · 08/03/2009 08:24

Not so sure about Hector. I am old enough to equate it with Hectors House (a big grumpy old Hector). Which I did love btw, it's just that I think of Hector the dog.

But I absolutely love your other choice, Emmett

TsarChasm · 08/03/2009 08:26

Oh dear looking at mine and JaneSeymours last posts...total opposite thoughts there!

I wonder - not for the first time - if anyone ever finds these baby name threads helpful or whether they add to the dilemma

Leannabanana · 08/03/2009 08:28

i most certainly did say Emmett....it means industrious ant...which i think is sweet actually....meanings aare not so important tho to us as the actual name....i like Em for a boy...i like emma for a girl but DH has awful friend called emma who would just think it was after her....My name means creeping vine and if i can live with that then industrious ant seems heroic in its own small way....x

OP posts:
JaneSeymour · 08/03/2009 08:32

Yes that is rather sweet actually. I am revising my opinion!!

Leannabanana · 08/03/2009 08:38

gotta love an insect that can carry 20 times its own bodyweight and has the best sense of working together for the greater good of the community that i have ever seen....ok hold on....think i am getting a bit defensive on the side of ants.....

my bigger prob with Emmett is that we have a surname beginning with M... Emmet M....is it to many M's??

OP posts:
TsarChasm · 08/03/2009 08:39

I agree! I still like it v much. I can see why you don't necessarily want someone awful running away with the idea that you've named your baby after them.

Mind you, no matter what happens people seem to strive (usually somewhat wide of the mark I found) to see a connection with a gorgeous new baby and themselves whether in looks or in a subtle a connection with the name. They all want a piece of the glory. Just look surprised and deny any linkAll that dies down anyway.

If you really like it go for it.

dollius · 08/03/2009 08:49

Our dog is called Hector

Leannabanana · 08/03/2009 08:53

one dog does not ruin a name....x

LoveBuckets · 08/03/2009 08:54

Ooh now I like Hector but not Hugo, think it's the Mexican gangster thing adds edge. Hugo is just a chunky sweater wearing rugger bugger to me - went to uni with far too many of those types.

Peachy · 08/03/2009 09:17

Now I like Hector, think it has cool potential. When you have a child with a rare name the name and child merge tocreate their own identity which is great IMO (1 of my 4 boys has a rare name).

Wheelybug · 08/03/2009 12:43

I adore the name Hector and if dc2 is a boy his middle name will be William. Unforetunately Hector doesn't really go with our surname but if it did this would be my number 1 choice so have it for me please .

randomname · 08/03/2009 13:27

Love Hector, know a Tor too (4) he's a cool little chap

Leannabanana · 10/03/2009 12:11

Does Hector Leon sound better than Hector William?

OP posts:
frazzledoldbag · 10/03/2009 12:31

No, Hector William is gorgeous.
Hector Leon is ok, but sounds slightly like 'Herculean' if you say it fast.

HelpwithNameNeeded · 10/03/2009 19:49

Hector does go with Leon at all, definitely better with William

HelpwithNameNeeded · 10/03/2009 19:49

*not go with Leon

Leannabanana · 11/03/2009 11:22

helpwithnameneeded - see my other thread if you can think of a midle name to go with Loralei...i'm stuck. x

A Hector Protector is the cod piece you stick down your pants when you play cricket to protect your..erm...Hector.

I couldn't get past that I'm afraid.
