Flower names - views on whether to continue the trend?

We are expecting number 4 and suspect it may be a girl. I have two DDs, both of whom are named after flowers. While it would be nice to continue the theme, a part of me worries about it being a bit naff. Although I suppose it only comes to light when calling them all, eg when in the playground. But also, I am starting to run out of nice options (not nice options being things like Hyacinth or Petunia, in my book - no offence intended to anyone who has DDs named Hyacinth or Petunia ). Would be grateful for any thoughts on whether you think it completely awful to continue with the theme, and (if not) what flower names there are which are nice for girls.

I like Camellia, Marigold or Freesia.

LiffeyAndFriends · 06/03/2009 20:28

Alyssum is a flower, could be Alys for short, which ties in but isn't too themey.

changer22 · 06/03/2009 20:30

I have an unusual flower named DD but we chose not to continue with it when we had another DD.

It depends on whether you like any other flower names and whether your DDs have more common names. I think of Rose as an old fashioned name for example, rather than a flower as opposed to Hyacinth which is a flower name. Just as I think of Benjamin as a boys name but Reuben as a Jewish name.

MinaLoy · 06/03/2009 20:30

Daphne is a flower name that some people don't realise is a flower name

BonsoirAnna · 06/03/2009 20:32

Capucine

CharleeInChains · 06/03/2009 20:33

Rose
Poppy
Daisy
Primrose
Lilly

Tidey · 06/03/2009 20:34

The only nice ones I can think of are Daisy, Rose, Lily and Poppy.

Tidey · 06/03/2009 20:35

x-post with Charlee there too

MoshiMoshi · 06/03/2009 20:36

Hmm, so is the general consensus that it wouldn't be too naff? I agree changer22 that some names can be construed in other ways. We have a Lily and a Rose currently and I do tend to think of Rose as the old fashioned name rather than the flower, which is what I think of when I think of Lily!

So next question is what would fit nicely with Lily and Rose?!

I think it would sound a bit twee to go for a really obvious one like Poppy or Daisy.

I might go for something slightly more obscure like Sorrell or Dahlia.

Violet and Iris are nice though.

ChasingSquirrels · 06/03/2009 20:50

you don't have a boy called william as well do you?

MoshiMoshi · 06/03/2009 20:52

Chasingsquirrels: No, not William. Thomas (nn Tommy). So we have a Tommy, Lily, Rose and [insert suggestion!]...

Sesi: Bit worried now about the twee factor!

iris, if you don't have one already.

weepootle · 06/03/2009 20:53

I think it would be sad not to continue the trend. Fwiw, I don't think Daisy or Poppy would be naff.

How about Florence as a floral-y sounding name?

LynetteScavo · 06/03/2009 20:54

Anna

Grace

Posey

Sophie

LynetteScavo · 06/03/2009 20:54

Flora

squeaver · 06/03/2009 20:55

Bugger I was going to be clever and say Flora too!

MoshiMoshi · 06/03/2009 20:55

beanieb: Iris is something I have wondered about but cannot come to a decision as to whether I like it or not! Pregnancy hormones do not help ...

Weepootle: Thanks for the vote of confidence. DH likes Poppy and I do too but am not entirely sure (see previous comment re naff factor/twee-ness). We both like Florence or Flora but are not sure about the nn's from these (Flo or Florrie?)

weepootle · 06/03/2009 20:56

Flora's a great suggestion Lynette .

ChasingSquirrels · 06/03/2009 20:58

I don't know you then

changer22 · 06/03/2009 21:01

Flora is lovely.

MoshiMoshi · 06/03/2009 21:01

Hmm, Flora... Will try it again on DH tonight...

OP posts:
weepootle · 06/03/2009 21:03

Poppy is lovely and if you both like it then you should go for it. It always gets the 'twee' and 'can you imagine a judge called Poppy' comments on here but I think your flower theme is lovely and it goes well. I am biased though .

My favourites in order of preference:

Poppy
Florence
Flora
Violet
Iris

MoshiMoshi · 06/03/2009 21:04

ARRGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Suddenly thought of the margarine. My parents have it and will associate it with the marg. Also, as a keen runner, the Flora London Marathon brings it to mind again...

I don't think there's anything wrong with Flo or Florrie as nicknames btw.
