Is the name Noah very common where you live?

It is no 50 on the 100 most popular names but whenever i mention the name people seem to always say 'Noah is becoming very common nowadays.'

I don't know any and it's a lovely name.

I do, however, find myself using the sound 'Noah' quite a lot with my ds, in the form of:

'No...ah' - stress on the 'ah' for emphasis!!

macana · 05/03/2009 09:06

I know of quite a few, but don't actually know any. It was my favourite boys' name for years, but Dh wouldn't let me have it for our DS, born last year.

Go for it - it's a beautiful name.

jellybeans · 06/03/2009 09:12

i know one

finecheese · 06/03/2009 09:59

I know one and personally I think its quite an ugly name - it makes me think of a rhombus shape - is that wierd?

lunamoon2 · 08/03/2009 00:04

Don't know any.

thatsnotmymonster · 08/03/2009 00:07

I know 2 or 3, all under 3.

I love the name and considered it for dd1 but had shocked rections from PIL- they are really backwards when it comes to names- still love the name.

We're in Scotland BTW

lizmcfizz · 08/03/2009 05:09

It is becoming popular and that's in darkest Cumbria!

I've met the grand total of one Noah in the last five years. I have taught around 1000 children in that time. I think that's pretty good odds.

Considering that I have 8 Bens this year alone.

seeker · 08/03/2009 06:58

And even if it it 50th on the list, in the average Primary school of 200 there will be 2! Is this a huge problem?

For the record, I know 1 - he's 8, and I know hundreds of boys of all ages!

Pollyanna · 08/03/2009 07:02

I know 2, there is one in ds1's class and one in dd2s nursery class.

I know 2 Inigos though, 2 Jacks and 2 Gabriels, (all in varying positions on the lists) so I don't know how much help that is!

Wallace · 08/03/2009 07:12

I know no Noahs.

Babbity · 08/03/2009 08:27

one on another forum (and he's abroad)

none in real life (I'm in Surrey)

The thing with top 50/100 names is that in the past the top twenty would cover 80% of children, but there are more names out there at the moment so the top 20 covers fewer children IYSWIM. Both my children have names around #70 in the ranking and we've never met another, and most of my friends say how uncommon they are (even though they're very traditional names which were top ten up to 20 years ago). Uncommon but not unusual.

LavenderStar · 09/03/2009 12:15

I know one but I think it is difficult with boys names, they need to be more traditional than girls' names so they don't get bullied at school! Eg a girl can get away with being called Marigold or Autumn, but a boy really needs something more conventional. I think last year there were nearly 1000 more different girls than boys names registered.

I also think top 50 is fine! Top 5 or top 10 would maybe be a problem. But top 50 - no. You don't want anything too uncommon (especially for a boy IMO). I think Noah is nice. And I would take comfort in the fact it is getting more common - it means you have good taste! IMO it will never be top 10 in the next 10 years.

Also remember names have to stand the test of time - I know people who have picked quite unusual names for their children and now really dislike them only 4 or 5 years later!

Ceolas · 09/03/2009 12:25

Think I have met one in the last 5 years. I'm in Scotland.

suwoo · 09/03/2009 12:25

My DS is Noah, he is 2.3. I only know of one other in RL. I think you can hear of a lot of them on MN because people know so many children. Like you say, it is currently number 50 or so, but I can see a rapid escalation when the next chart is launched.

tiggerlovestobounce · 09/03/2009 12:28

I dont know of any Noahs where I am. I think its a lovely name (but thats probably because it makes me think of Noah Wyle ).

MadaMoo · 09/03/2009 23:40

I know one

Was on the list was Noah.

Go with WHAT YOU LIKE, stuff popularity!

nappyaddict · 13/03/2009 13:52
