I've never heard of it before. Is it for a boy or girl? Is it from any particular culture?

kerryk · 02/03/2009 16:44

girls name. i thought it was scottish but my friend is convinced it is irish.

it's a skiing place in Europe isn't it? Don't know how I'd pronounce it.

kerryk · 02/03/2009 16:46

Are you thinking of the name Muireann? Which is actually pronounced M-w-irr-an, a bit like the beginning of Moi.

Pronounced properly I think it is gorgeous but dp couldnt get his head round it and have to say I really do NOT like it pronounced Murren TBH. Sorry

The niece of a friend is called Murren. I think it's gaelic. I quite like the sound of it, but the spelling is slightly ugly.

GossipMonger · 02/03/2009 16:59

think the spelling and sound are ugly

Lilymaid · 02/03/2009 17:01

I'm going on holiday in Murren

I think it's pretty, but I like the spelling "Mirren" or "Mirrin" better. I also like Maren and Mara, all very cute!

LouMacca · 02/03/2009 17:49

agree with Gossip.

BonsoirAnna · 02/03/2009 17:51

Murren is a small village in the Swiss Alps.

BonsoirAnna · 02/03/2009 17:52

It's positively weird as a first name and rather too close to "moron" for comfort.

SoupDragon · 02/03/2009 17:57

It' s kind of ugly looking.

queenofeyes · 02/03/2009 20:30

I also have a feeling "murrain" is some kind of cattle disease...

LiffeyBag · 02/03/2009 20:32

My son's doctor is Muireann, pronounced Mwirren, and sometimes Mirren. Bit like Helen Mirren. I quite like it, don't love it.

LiffeyBag · 02/03/2009 20:34

Yes, mór is gaelic for big.

Angelsus · 02/03/2009 20:56

I know of quite a few Mirren's. It's quite popular here (north scotland) and I like it!

Botbot · 02/03/2009 21:00

Too close to Maureen?

YesSirICanBoogie · 02/03/2009 21:12

There are loads of Mirrens in Paisley after the local football team. I think all the variations are from the same root.

dizzydixies · 02/03/2009 21:27

the original spelling is Muiranne (pn mirren) and its a beautiful name
