I like it. I've never met a Queenie before. Cute.

Lawks · 01/03/2009 19:09

I like it very much.

Quattrocento · 01/03/2009 19:10

Wonderful for a dog.

DeeBlindMice · 01/03/2009 19:16

yuck, so awful.

the only Queenie I've ever heard of is Bert Baxter's mot, so it reminds me of pots of rouge too, although I always thought it was an unfortunate name for even a fictional old lady

Well there were nearly 15000 Queenie's registered after 1880, 10000 of them were after 1910 so it was a name in its own right and mostly in the south east as it was a cockney name. Often used though as a nick name for the first daughter of the family, and not always the actual name of the first born daughter.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/03/2009 20:27

Queenie Baxter in Andrian Mole was Maud Lilian.
It is wierd that I remember that!

southeastastra · 01/03/2009 20:27

it's right cockney innit

TheFallenMadonna · 01/03/2009 20:27

or weird even...

DeeBlindMice · 01/03/2009 20:29

well done TheFallenMadonna

Poor Queenie, Maud and Lilian are such nice names

mags98 · 01/03/2009 20:34

Awful. Sorry.

Yeni · 02/03/2009 09:46

A scallop.

mickeylou · 02/03/2009 10:11

i think its really cute. it needs quite a confident little girl to carry it off though! what are your other children called or is this number 1?

SoupDragon · 02/03/2009 10:12

Dreadful.

treacletart · 02/03/2009 10:28

I think historically it was used as a diminutive for girls called Mary Alexandra, Or Victoria Alexandra or any other regal combo. To be really honest, I'm not keen for the same reasons I don't like girls being called Princess - even as a petname - just think it sends all the wrong messages. Sorry.

Thanks for all your feedback!
TBH the Asda/Morrisons type quotes make me wince- so provincial!- but thanks to the rest of you for your input

Nooooooo

Juwesm · 02/03/2009 15:44

Takes me straight to Blackadder too. Also scallops.

Juwesm · 02/03/2009 15:47

But then I like the name Freya, and they make bras. There'll always be something negative about a name if you think hard enough. And even a name which seems lovely now, may suddenly have become derogatory in 30 years time - look at Wally.

hester · 02/03/2009 15:50

I actually really like it. But I don't think enough of the rest of the world agrees with us to make it worth the risk

georgimama · 02/03/2009 15:55

It's awful. Honestly it is.

Why would you do this to your child?

Please be joking.

Sycamoretree · 02/03/2009 15:55

I think it's great! I can see how it could feel really contemporary/a nice bit of attitude to it and very unusual.

Sycamoretree · 02/03/2009 16:01

Just seen you are in Brighton - I think it would be great there! I think there is a Queenie in the novel Small Island...a very complex character with her heart in the right place.

I do also like Pearl though, another suggestion on this thread. But I bet that's already soaring up the popularity list...

georgimama · 02/03/2009 16:06

So prospective DD has to live in Brighton all her life and have the "lifestyle" to carry off Queenie.

Please don't do this.

Pearl is also dreadful.
