Righteo, have name changed for this because I want to give my other DCs names and don't want people in RL to be able to identify me by them and read some of my other, more personal posts!

DH and myself have just discovered we're pregnant again, we thought we'd give it one last shot and if it happened it happened and if not no worries.

Well we're thrilled to pieces but a bit stuck on names! having 6DCS already we've used up a lot of our favourite names!

So far we have:
DS1, Archibald Edward (Archie) 16
DD1, Christabelle Edie Jocasta 15
DD2, Ottilie Violet Grace 11
DS2, Hamish Rupert 7
DD3, Antigone Lila Rae nearly 3
DD4, Flossie Isabella Rose 1

so does anyone have any wise suggestions? we quite like Fabrizia, Seraphina, Delphi, Yveline, Ivy, Regan, Kitty and Isolde and for DSs Xerxes, Apollo, Oberon (king of the fairies connotations though, maybe too cruel?) Caspian, Ptolemy, Horatio and Titus.
But none of these seem to REALLY grab us.

You should hear my middle name, TomNook. Like the Country song about the boy named Sue, an unusual name can make you into a more interesting person. Mine has certainly got me a couple of valuable job interviews over the years, instead of leaving my CV languishing on a pile somewhere with a hundred others.

Quite a few of the names on this thread are common and completely normal in other European countries, and you are just showing what a parochial little Englander you are by being so rude.

Now bog off back to your copy of the Daily Mail and your instant coffee and leave us creatives to get poetic in peace.

dinkymum · 22/02/2009 17:36

I love the name Lysander btw Sandy for short?

noddyholder · 22/02/2009 17:42

an unusual name cannot make you interesting but can make a dull person think they are

Unlikelyamazonian · 22/02/2009 17:48

Troy - girl or boy's name!

BoffinMum · 22/02/2009 18:04

Says who Noddy?

pointydog · 22/02/2009 18:09

agree with noddy.

As proven by some people I have met with unusual names.

MmeLindt · 22/02/2009 18:13

I taught children called Thorben, Viviane, Rebekka and Berenike.

nooka · 22/02/2009 18:33

I like Caspian (but prefer Caspar) Ptolemy (if your child will be in the sort of social circumstances to pull it off) . Horatio is fantastic, but if you have a Hamish I'm not so sure. Hector which has also been suggested on the thread is also great and goes with the Scottish theme you seem to have with your boys. We had a dog called Titus, but it's quite cool too. I don't really like the god names - a bit too Sci-Fi for me (and I like Sci-Fi), and I think Oberon would be quite hard to live with.

I'm not very keen on any of your girls names. Fabrizia is too like Fabreeze to me, and Ivy and Kitty too "of the moment" given that you want something unusual. Regan seems very 70's. I am interested why you chose Flossie for your littlest? It seems like a nick/pet name compared with the rather grander names that the rest of your children have (the only Flossie I know is called that because her hair is like candy floss).

I think if you choose something unusual it really does have to grab you, because you need a good story for your child to tell. Having said that I love my unusual name, and the fact that I have never ever met another "me". I do think names are influential, and that getting them right for your child is very important.

nooka · 22/02/2009 18:38

I have a friend called Vivianne. I think it's lovely. I like both Theodore and Thaddeus, and we were going to call dd Ezra. I think unusual girls' names are more tricky. We did have a thread about Boudicca the other day though. That would be quite cool. ds is called after a famous king and really likes the association (but dd likes her family connection too).

treacletart · 22/02/2009 18:42

Girls: Camille, Persephone, Agatha, Honor, Honoria, Horatia, Phaedra, Candida (although the Albicans connection could be too much - great pity because its a beautiful name otherwise)

Boys: Casper, Hector, Felix, Angus, Otto, Ivor

treacletart · 22/02/2009 18:45

and there's always Septimus / Septima of course!

LaDiDaDi · 22/02/2009 18:45

Isolde and Caspian from your initial list.

From the other suggestions already made
Hero, Pandora and Xanthe are lovely for girls. I like Gideon and Ludo for boys.

Other ideas:
Girls-
Henrietta
Wilhemina
Posy
Delilah
Patience
Nuala
Demelza
Genevieve
Polly
Tig er
Nina

Boys-
Hardy
Kit
Magnus
Gulliver
Thor
Ambrose
Bear
Monty

LaDiDaDi · 22/02/2009 18:47

Oh and Ida is nicer than Ivy imo.

NorthernLurker · 22/02/2009 18:48

Septimus is a must I think!

Orlando? (I love that but dh was horrified and we had girls so not an issue)

Perdita? (best not to lose her though)

Cassandra?

Ada?

NorthernLurker · 22/02/2009 18:48

Richenda?

kerryk · 22/02/2009 18:52

i love lancelot (as suggested by someone else)

i looked after the cutest little spanish boy ever when i was training to be nursery nurse and after his mum stopped bringing in his comfort toy (called dodo) he would wander around all day saying "mama no no dodo"

brings back lots of cute memories

babynumber7 · 22/02/2009 18:58

Nooka, Flossie was always going to be Florence, we loved the name and there's a strong possibility she was concieved there (only divulging that one on an anonymous forum!)
However at about 5 months pregnant we decided the nn would be flossie, told the other DCs who immediately started referring to bump as Flossie (nvm she could have been a little brother for them...) by the time she was born Florence just didn't seem right, Flossie 'fitted' her and it would have seem odd to call her anything else!

Monty has gone onto the list (maybe Montgomery?)

babynumber7 · 22/02/2009 19:00

Oh and we're saving Octavia/Octavius/Octavian just in case, Septimus just seems a bit bit 'slimy' but if its a DD we might use Septima as a middle name!

bangandthedirtisgone · 22/02/2009 19:05

What do you think of 'The Hulk'?

keepingitRia · 22/02/2009 19:07

I love Lysander and Silas (laready suggested by someone else)
I also love the Green Knowe books where the boy is called Tolly and the ghost boy is Toby (but both short for Toseland)

My cat is called Oberon. We call him Obi, so maybe at infant school it will be a Stars Wars problem til the fairy thing kicks in.

Girls name - I know of a Persephone called Percie for short. Clemency is nice. And love Ursula and Clodagh.

Good luck!

thumbwitch · 22/02/2009 19:07

my contributions:
Evadne
Angelica
Isadora

Maximilian
Dante
Jasper

I quite like Horatio, tbh.
Monty is quite common round my way (I have met 2 already and DS is only 14.5mo and we only go to babyswimming and gymbabes)

IloveBrucie · 22/02/2009 19:13

What great names, good for you

Ludovic
Valentine

Sod the pet, call him Cosmo - absolutely gorgeous name

jemart · 22/02/2009 19:24

Wish my DH would let me have such fab names, all his suggestions for naming our latest addition are very ordinary indeed.

I really like Theodore, Cosmo, or Valentine for a boy.

Girl names - Evadne, Tabitha, Isadora, Lynette, Alexandria, Cosima, Valentina.

nooka · 22/02/2009 19:27

Makes sense (although personally I still would have used Florence on the birth certificate, but then I like formality). Do your older children have any interesting suggestions for the baby?

nooka · 22/02/2009 19:29

One of my parents alternate names for me (they had five girls and five boys combos lined up) was Cosmo (after the celestial twins). I have to say I am very glad I wasn't a boy.
