Mum and Dad names

... as opposed to the Gran/Grandpa chic that seems to be all the rage at the moment. We've decided on Anna for out little one in utero but had we been expecting a boy, we toyed with names like John, Mark, Andrew etc, that possibly sound moderately passé rather than completely archaic. I'm 20 and find there's something both cool and comforting simultaneously about names that were still in - but just starting to drift out of - fashion when I was at school. I'm thinking Nicole, Karen, Nigel (can't abide this one but it's a good example!) etc etc.

So, just for fun. What Mum/Dad names do we like/can we think of etc.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

there were 4 Lisas in my year at school. Also 4 Nicolas, 4 Kates, 3 Catherines and 2 Heathers (two classes of 36 children each). 3 Simons and 3 Neils - but we also had a Kai and a Barnaby. The Barnaby was the vicar's son, tho, so perhaps he was explicable!

Hmm interesting, I'm 23 but think my school (or our parents at least) must have been stuck in some kind of time warp as loads of these names are names of people I remember from school!

e.g.,

Helen
Simon
Craig
Matthew
Michael
Susie
Cathy
Yvonne
Andy
Mary
and even a Barbara!

DH has just suggested we call our unborn child Margaret or Leonard for a boy. I have refused any physical contact all day on account of the Margaret suggestion. Most insulting as this is the first name he has suggested so far.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 21/02/2011 23:18

I like Margaret! Maggie is a cool name.

My nephew (13) goes to school with a Roger and an Ian.

TobyLerone · 21/02/2011 23:28

I love Margaret/Maggie :)

TobyLerone · 21/02/2011 23:32

You've missed Bruce from the 70's boys and Adam, we had a fair few of those in our school.

Meandacat · 22/02/2011 13:38

Woman at work just called her baby Maggie. :)

When starting DD at nursery last month I remember remarking to DH that the most unusual name there was a little boy named Graeme.

DH is a Michael. I really love it.

Wondering if Barbara will ever make a come-back...

SuperheroYuki · 22/02/2011 13:53

I love the name Iris but my other half vetoed it as a 'granny' name :(

You don't get many Lavinia's or Violet's any more do you? My Nan was called Doreen which is a proper Grandma name!!

Meandacat · 22/02/2011 14:03

I know [of] a Violet. And I'm sure Dave Grohl has a daughter called Violet. I thought it was one of those newly popular names from the 20s like Stanley or Ruby.

TobyLerone · 22/02/2011 16:42

Iris is one of my daughter's middle names. I wanted to call her Iris, but in the end we named her after my nana because she was born on what would have been my nana's birthday.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 22/02/2011 17:08

No, Violet is an on-trend name these days.

I have heard a few baby Kevins recently and had to admit to myself that the first wave of Kevins must now be grandads - and it's gone full circle. [gettingoldemoticon]

Has Jason been mentioned? Loads of Jasons, Lees, Jamies and Roberts in my class (I'm a 70s baby).

I know a 90-something Claire. When I say my friend Claire people think I'm talking about a thirty-something.
