Mum and Dad names

... as opposed to the Gran/Grandpa chic that seems to be all the rage at the moment. We've decided on Anna for out little one in utero but had we been expecting a boy, we toyed with names like John, Mark, Andrew etc, that possibly sound moderately passé rather than completely archaic. I'm 20 and find there's something both cool and comforting simultaneously about names that were still in - but just starting to drift out of - fashion when I was at school. I'm thinking Nicole, Karen, Nigel (can't abide this one but it's a good example!) etc etc.

So, just for fun. What Mum/Dad names do we like/can we think of etc.

James has been in the top ten baby names for atleast the last 10 years! It's truely timeless.

Lol at baby Trevor - actually there was one int he paper t'other year and we all said the same thing. I think it may have been the dad's name (which is why this can be a Big Mistake).

captainpeacock · 21/02/2009 00:11

This is a fabby post these are all names of people i went to school with. Others to add are: Tania, Sharon, Karen, Russell, Brian, Gillian, Theresa, Caroline/Carolyn, Maria, Michael, Andrew, Sonia and Martin.

Clary · 21/02/2009 00:13

Oh and Julie as well. I must know about 5 Julies at the school gates but none in the school.

lolianja · 21/02/2009 00:51

Names like Rebecca, James, Matthew, Charlotte... very surprised to see these mentioned, they're all in the top 10 or 20 baby name lists today and have been for decades! Rebecca and Charlottes are EVERYWHERE at secondary schools currently and Matthew and James... were they ever not in?

I agree with Julie. And I think names like Karen, Nicola, Mark and Paul are due a renaissance!

'Tevor Derck and Nigel will never come back into fashion.'

I think they will! I would never have imagined that people could call a baby Wilf, Stanley or Archie-but they do!

BakewellTarts · 21/02/2009 09:40

I have a little Rebecca (just under 4 months) so obviously don't see it as a Mum and Dad name .

Brenda and Reg is hideous and not coming back, not even in middle-aged chic kind of way, but re-jig slightly to Zelda and Greg

lolianja · 21/02/2009 14:52

Great choices helsy!

What's bizarre is that I remember so many of these names from my schooldays and I only left a couple of years ago. All of the names at the bottom of the school that were just creeping in, ie Kayden, Alfie etc etc that are very popular today were pretty much unheard of "in my day" (ha!). I suppose I must be just on the edge of the cultural/generational border, so to speak! One of my cousins in their late 30s has more in common with my mother (mid 40s) than with their younger sibling in their early-to-mid 30s. The generation "gaps" come in such funny places!

helsy · 21/02/2009 17:27

Ah well Lolianja, as I'm old enough to be your mum, they're not so much "mum/dad" names as "grandparent" names

LaDiDaDi · 21/02/2009 17:57

Roy
Susan
John
Mary
Alan
Carolyn
Stephen
Paul
Deborah
Karen

squeaver · 21/02/2009 18:09

clary and phoenix - you're obviously my generation! But I disagree - I think it will 2 or 3 generations before these names come back in (just like Wilf and Mabel now).

The popular ones from my school days were

Jill
Gillian
Diane
Nicola
Laura
Jackie
Alison
Suzanne
Elaine
Dawn
Paula

They're such 60s/70s names. I just can't imagine them being used for a loooooonnng time.
