Mum and Dad names

... as opposed to the Gran/Grandpa chic that seems to be all the rage at the moment. We've decided on Anna for out little one in utero but had we been expecting a boy, we toyed with names like John, Mark, Andrew etc, that possibly sound moderately passé rather than completely archaic. I'm 20 and find there's something both cool and comforting simultaneously about names that were still in - but just starting to drift out of - fashion when I was at school. I'm thinking Nicole, Karen, Nigel (can't abide this one but it's a good example!) etc etc.

So, just for fun. What Mum/Dad names do we like/can we think of etc.

OP posts:

Linda, Sandra, Colin, Jennifer, Alan, Robert

(my mum and her brothers and sisters!)

paulbrom · 21/02/2011 11:16

Anne/Anna and John are lovely IMO and I think they're going to come back hard in the next decade or so. Also like Mark.

melikalikimaka · 21/02/2011 11:17

Rodger, Gordon, Donald, Gary, Ken, Terry, Pete, Kurt, Alan, Ian, Amanda, Donna, Elaine, Kathy, Anita, Sharon!

paulbrom · 21/02/2011 11:20

Oh fgs, I hadn't finished!

I think Linda and Jane/Janet are really pretty and due a comeback. I like "sensible" names though, we had Paul and David on our boy's list and I liked Mary and Sylvia very much and will possibly use for a DD2. I can't use Linda myself as my DM has a nemesis named Lynda and would be v offended!

paulbrom · 21/02/2011 11:21

scottishmummy · 21/02/2011 11:29

BiscuitBob · 21/02/2011 11:31

The names that immediately spring to mind are Susan, Janet, Peter, David, Clive, Richard, Robert, though not a fan of them myself.

BeattieBow · 21/02/2011 11:34

I really like the name Deborah actually.

You don't meeet many baby Wendy's at the moment do you? There were a few in my school in the 1970s/80s.

The OP is only 20 so her idea of mum/dad chick is rather different to mine I think!

BeattieBow · 21/02/2011 11:34

chic even!

Dixiebell · 21/02/2011 11:49

Loving this idea, although I can't quite imagine calling a baby any of these names...

Brian, Douglas, Ian, Nigel, Julian, Andrew, Colin, Ken

Gloria, Jane, Kathy, Linda, Barbara, Fawnia, Angela, Sue, Lorna, Val, Janice

My mum's middle name is Prudence....although maybe Pru is getting towards the trendy side? Hmm

Hatterbox · 21/02/2011 11:53

My parents are Gerard and Florinda.

BaggedandTagged · 21/02/2011 11:56

My name is on here- probably shouldn't be surprised as I am a mum and when I did the Facebook "How original were your parents when they chose your name" it came up with a D-.

That said, it's still popular now, although not as much as it was.

bebejones · 21/02/2011 12:29

Margaret, Pauline, Kathy, Brenda, Patricia, Penelope

Steven, Robert, Alan, Patrick, Graham, Michael.

These are ones that spring to mind! Definitely some on here due a revival!

AnneinEdinburgh · 21/02/2011 12:41

Ronald, Audrey, Norman, Frances/Frank, Linda, Sue, Valerie, Donald, Maureen, Marjorie Grin

Flowe · 21/02/2011 13:02

Being on the "wrong end" of the mum/dad name I find it bizzare that people are once again considering Freda a cool name for kids. maybe the Geoffreys and Trevors will feel the same in time.

2and1ontheway · 21/02/2011 13:09

My 5 year old is Anna - we named her when we lived in the UK and it was relatively unusual for a baby but then we moved to southern Germany when she was 20 months old and every other little girl is called Anna! Confused Our next door neighbour has an Anna 5 months older than ours, there is an Anna-Lena on our road a month older than our Anna, and an Anna a year or so older 'round the corner, just looking at 5 and 6 year old Annas within about 200 meters of where we live!
So it depends where you live!

TobyLerone · 21/02/2011 13:43

Weird...a couple of days ago, my bf, my daughter and I were having a conversation about 'mum' and 'dad' names. We were also making up stories about them.

For example:

Bernard drives the minibus for football away games.

Lesley makes birthday cakes as a hobby.

Brenda knits matinee jackets for anyone's newborn babies.

Gary and Lee (and sometimes Steve) organise the stag nights and boys' nights out.

Alan is a policeman.

pawsnclaws · 21/02/2011 13:57

I know a baby Kevin! Parents aren't English though. And a six year old Dennis.

Bearing in mind that ds1's class is full of Olivers, Lillys and Sophies, and ds2's has several Emilys and Hannahs, Kevin and Dennis will at least stand out in the crowd Wink.

dubaipieeye · 21/02/2011 14:05

Surprised to see Jenny/Jennifer on this thread a couple of times - I thought it was quite timeless...like Charlotte?

Mutters, grumbles

Menagerie · 21/02/2011 15:09

I'm envious of anyone with a girl called Sylvie. If I hadn't had all boys it was my top fave.

I'm old enough to be OP's mum. In our class were Wendy, Janice, Barbara, Elaine, Justine (love that too - no Justines around these days) Lisa, Kathleen, Doreen (pronounced Dreen), Julie (love that too) Laura, Alison, and the rest were all called Claire, Cath or Susan, including me and my sister!

Boys were Kevin, Kenneth, Colin, Ian, half a dozen Davids, Christophers and Peters, Tom, Graham, Timothy, Julian, Paul, Michael, Ray, Simon and Andrew.

pranma · 21/02/2011 15:34

Pamela and Derek
