Mum and Dad names

... as opposed to the Gran/Grandpa chic that seems to be all the rage at the moment. We've decided on Anna for out little one in utero but had we been expecting a boy, we toyed with names like John, Mark, Andrew etc, that possibly sound moderately passé rather than completely archaic. I'm 20 and find there's something both cool and comforting simultaneously about names that were still in - but just starting to drift out of - fashion when I was at school. I'm thinking Nicole, Karen, Nigel (can't abide this one but it's a good example!) etc etc.

So, just for fun. What Mum/Dad names do we like/can we think of etc.

My own Mum and Dad's names (in their 70s, or would be if alive) are riddled throughout this thread.

I disagree that there were fewer names to choose from a generation ago. I'm 37 and come from a small NZ town, so hardly cosmopolitan, and was at school with...

Odette
Odile
Karma
Tarlei
Isobel
Ingrid
Inga
Heidi
Britney
Harriet
Jodie
Cindy
Raneah
Imogen
Bernece
Cecily
Chloe
Desma

As a randome selection...

I have massively outed myself with that little lot! Grin

gimmer · 21/02/2011 18:22

I saw a 7 week old baby Trevor recently. Didn't quite know what to say!

KentMum2008 · 21/02/2011 18:39

My 4 year old DD is Jenny and everyone always says 'Oh my mums name is Jenny, is she a Jennifer??' (yes she is btw) but if you knew my lovely girl, you'd see how much Jenny suits her!!

Adrian is one, can you imagine calling your baby Adrian? Or Gordon, Peter or Russell?? These are all names of grown men!
Mirian is a Mum name, Eileen, Maureen or Jaqueline. Lol, can you imagine 'We're proud to announce the birth of baby Eileen'

My dad is called Alan. Can you imagine calling a little baby Alan? Grin

pinkhousesarebest · 21/02/2011 19:22

Julie is alive and thriving among the fashionable French families here, as is Tess and Pauline.

lisianthus · 21/02/2011 19:42

Heh. Both DD's names have now been mentioned several times. I like these names. Neil was on our list and I also like Shirley. I also like Alan, although to me it has more Sir Walter Scott type connotations. Very Norman French knights and castles sort of thing. Like Hugh, which I don't like very much.

I would also like to mention:
Glenda
Lorraine
Kylie
Christine

If I had a small dog, I would call it Glenda.

randommummy · 21/02/2011 19:56

Our little boy was born 15 days ago and we've called him Andrew. A good solid name, that people can spell - and hopefully he'll be the only one in his class at school ( unlike all the Harry / Alfie / Dylan s etc.)

Wafflenose · 21/02/2011 20:24

I know a toddler called Jacqueline and an 11 year old called Raymond! Has Simon cropped up yet? There were 8 in my year at school! (I'm in my 30s)

anyway, once met a baby kenneth!

5DollarShake · 21/02/2011 20:46

DS's name has appeared on here twice - very unfashionable, although easily recognisable - he will be he only one in his class, for sure. Admittedly he is not known by the name itself (and hasn't been since day 1), but rather a diminutive of the name.

piebald · 21/02/2011 21:05

Ha ha lolianja to you they may say Granny, lots of us are thinking --ooh those are names from our schooldays!!

piebald · 21/02/2011 21:06

What about Tracy and you never hear Kevin or Kelvin anymore

Inertia · 21/02/2011 21:25

As a 70s/80s schoolgirl I concur with the vast numbers of children called Sarah, Nicola, Emma, Karen, Claire, Susan, Steven, Andrew, Anthony, Mark, Paul etc. But also in my year there were 3 girls called Heidi and 3 boys called Barnaby- I'm wondering whether these names are considered typical of the early 70s?

eurycantha · 21/02/2011 21:30

DH and I heard a Mum shouting "Paul, Paul" across the playground the other day.

I BET he is the only Paul in his school amongst the Cory's, Ethans's, Zak's, Dylans's, etc....
