I really like it, but the rice pudding connection is making me unsure.... was it your first association? Does it matter?

Also like that it has an Irish connection without being OTT for an English child. WDYT?

ermm - my first thought when I saw the thread title was rice pudding (and that's before I read your OP where you'd mentioned it).

MmeLindt · 08/02/2009 12:41

Same as FAQ, I thought of Ambrosia before opening the thread.

It is a nice name though.

memoo · 08/02/2009 13:30

makes me think of rice pudding too

Please don't saddle your DC with such a name

Sesi · 08/02/2009 18:37

Hmm ok, the rice pudding association is strong!

I'm not sure if i care lol, it's not the worst association and imo it's quite a fab name. Will have to think a bit more about....

I thought rice pudding before I opened the thread

gagarin · 08/02/2009 18:40

creamed rice - yum

Divineintervention · 08/02/2009 18:40

I think it is the name of a farm or a cow.

ScummyMummy · 08/02/2009 18:40

Sorry- rice pudding here too.

DeeBlindMice · 08/02/2009 18:41

yuk awful name. I am Irish, not sure what Irish connection there might be but this to me is a name for a fat red-faced great uncle wearing a brown and beige cardigan.

FAQinglovely · 08/02/2009 18:42

it comes from Greek mythology doesn't - food of the Gods or some such thing.

Sesi · 08/02/2009 18:43

Yes FAQ that is more what i'm thinking off.

Do you think the rice pudding thing ruins the name though, i'm starting to think it might not matter if it's a nice name?? Not sure?

Would bother me if it's a cow's name though (or a fat uncle's name lol).

I think the rice pudding thing ruins the name, as most peoples first thoughts will be "rice pudding" - they may think of the Greeky mythology connection afterwards, but by then they're alread thinking "rice pudding"

dizzyTHETARTANARMYdixies · 08/02/2009 18:49

rice pudding to me too sorry

GossipMonger · 08/02/2009 18:50

is it a boy name or for a girl?

It is a very feminine name but too rice puddingy for me.

changer22 · 08/02/2009 18:51

I love it.

A Mumsnet founder has it as a middle.

Showing my retentive side!

justneedsomesleep · 08/02/2009 18:52

i think it is a lovely name

PestoBlizzardMonster · 08/02/2009 18:53

Rice pudding connotations

sorry

brimfull · 08/02/2009 18:54

no
sounds sissy and poncy

or thicko country yokel

bruxeur · 08/02/2009 18:56

What about Curtly instead, and use Ambrose for a middle name?

GossipMonger · 08/02/2009 18:56

I do think of an old farmer in scruffy clothes smoking a piece of straw if that helps at all.................

not a lovely snuggly clean newborn baby.....

......or a teenager smoking behind the bike sheds!!............

.........or a cool graphic designer........

........but deffo a grandpa............

constancereader · 08/02/2009 18:58

I think it is a great name.

It reminds me of "My Cousin Rachel", not rice pudding.

TrillianAstra · 08/02/2009 18:59

Devon knows how the make it so creamy...

Sorry, first connection having read title only.

But they don't even advertise that stuff anymore do they? So by the time said child is in school it might not be such good bullying material.

Onlyaphase · 08/02/2009 19:00

I love the name too - so did my mother, to such an extent that when she had 3 DDs and no DS, she got a black labrador and called him Ambrose instead.

DumbledoresGirl · 08/02/2009 19:00

It doesn't remind me of rice pudding but then I have never had rice pudding from a tin.

The first connection in my mind is the policeman in Ballykissangel.

Doobydoo · 08/02/2009 19:01

I love it!Considered it for ds2.I also knew a girl called Ambrosine
Reminds me of the man from the book My Cousin Rachel.
