I really like it, but the rice pudding connection is making me unsure.... was it your first association? Does it matter?

Also like that it has an Irish connection without being OTT for an English child. WDYT?

Poncy. It's a Tristram sort of name.

Sesi · 08/02/2009 19:25

Am pleased some others like it. I might go for it, though I admit I am thinking ?Am I brave enough to use this name??.

I agree Trillian the pudding thing might not be an issue for the new generation. Does anyone eat it/buy it anymore?

Not keen on this yokel farm hand image. I was thinking it had a bit of a solemnly romantic Heathcliff vibe IYKWIM.

I think it's gorgeous.

ComeOVeneer · 08/02/2009 19:34

Didnt think of the rice pudding association unil others mentioned it, but as a name I'm not keen, compounded by the fact that it is the name of my ILs' smelly old, deaf, senile, incontinent dog

seeker · 08/02/2009 21:18

Sesi - it's not you that has to be brave - it's your ds. You won't be there in the playground with him.....!

BikeRunSki · 08/02/2009 21:33

My brother's name and I love it!

cory · 08/02/2009 21:51

My first connection is with the saint, and as far as I remember he's not a particularly cuddly Church Father. Better than Tertullian, I suppose.

MrsMattie · 09/02/2009 09:29

Reminds me of an old West Indian uncle.

othersideofchannel · 09/02/2009 11:33

I rather like Ambrose.

Pasiphae · 09/02/2009 11:59

Lovely, but does feel a tad "try-hard".

2Helenback · 09/02/2009 20:07

According to dh Ambrose Parr was something to do with inventing ligatures. (He's an historian, snore.) But this is good, as his usual reaction to such names is Captain Cavemen style guffaw and wee-taking. This is a man who has vetoed Gabriel as too wimpy.

It makes me think of 1970s Emmerdale Farm. Ambrose would have been a stalwart of the Woolpack with Amos and Mr Wilkes. A shepherd probably.

I realise the above marks me out as old, hormonally brain impaired, and possibly dangerous. I need more sleep.

ChippingIn · 09/02/2009 22:56

Sorry - just passing though - but I had to go back and check that I'd read it right... yep - rice pudding... sorry!

Doozle · 09/02/2009 23:09

Another rice pudding one here, all West Country rural farm type connotations.

Those who mentioned Tristram, are you sure you don't mean Tristan?

The former (Tristram) sounds like a tongue twister and imo not very nice, but I love Tristan - simple and masculine .

I like Ambrose too!

Creamed rice pudding, sorry!

janeite · 10/02/2009 20:57

I've only ever seen it used for boys of West Indian heritage whose parents were involved in gospel church. Lovely boys but don't think the name would work for an English child so well.

janeite · 10/02/2009 20:58

"English child" as used by the Op: not suggesting that the boys I taught weren't English as some of them were born in England.

alicecrail · 10/02/2009 20:59

I knew of an Ambrose that was short and smelt really bad -sorry. He was welsh, is it a welsh name?

Umlellala · 10/02/2009 21:06

Aw, I taught a little Ambrose. He was very very cute and very cheeky and funny. Think he had an Afro-Caribbean background.

lottiejenkins · 10/02/2009 21:07

It reminds me of the policeman in Ballykissangel..............
