Calypso or Calliope

DH and I cant agree on a name at all. Mainly because he likes very popular names and I like unusual. Neither of us like nicknames but realize this isn't something we cant control so it's important to us that we also like the shortened version of a name although we probably wont use it.

We really like Callie for a shortened name and we both really like Calypso. I really like Calliope too, DH undecided on it.

So any opinions on Calypso or Calliope?

Any other suggestions?

We have dont have a boys name either so any help on that would be greatly appreciated.

DH says he likes common popular names yet keeps suggestion Apollo? I thinking thats a step too far.

I like all sorts of boys name my favorite is Octavio.

Love Calypso - was on my list for one of DTs but vetoed by DP.

dragonbutter · 04/02/2009 00:29

I like apollo.

namehelp · 04/02/2009 00:35

I really like Calypso too and most likely top of the list, but I'm concerned about family reaction. FIL wont be happy he has an unusual name and hates it.

Dragon would you use Apollo?
I really wasn't keen at first but it's growing on me. Plus you cant really shorten the name so thats a bonus.

I like it but it would be off my list as our last name ends in O also.
I like it, but tbh it was never on our names list.
I just think it's quite cool.

I'm not so keen on calypso tbh, makes me think of ice lollies.

namehelp · 04/02/2009 00:44

LOL I though about the lollies too, now I'm used to it.

DH has been going on about Apollo since our 2nd date so he really does love it. Our Surname starts with M and I've seen mentioned a few times as a first name, it's a decent match.

Out of the two girl names I prefer Calypso. At least I know how to pronounce it.

I don't think Apollo is any more outragious that Calypso TBH.

Twenty your right but somehow Apollo does seem more like a made up name to me.

Calliope can either be pronounced Cal-il-ope or Call-e-op which we prefer.

Califrau would it bother you having an unusual name, does it cause problems as an adult?

I love Calliope - she's one of the Greek Muses (heroic poetry)

Wasn't Calypso in one of the Pirates of the Carribean movies?

I hated my name till I was an adult too. It's common but not unusual, unlikely to meet someone who had never heard of it but still the only one in the school.
The baby will have a common middle name just incase as an adult it's really hates our choice.

I don't think it's pathetic I can understand the need for that pencil that everyone has with their name on it except you, I had the same problem. The thing is unless your children's name is in the top 100 during their childhood then it's unlikely they will have there name on a pencil.

My mum once wrote my name on a piece of paper and sellotaped it to my mug ( I always wanted a mug with my name on it) I was not amused.

I prefer Calypso.

Having grown up with a name that was quite unusual (now well within the top 10), I understand the pencil thing too.

But the thing is now you can get anything you want printed to order.

seeker · 04/02/2009 06:13

Please don't.

LuLuBai · 04/02/2009 08:07

I love Calypso. There was a character in Mary Wesley's The Chamomile Lawn with the name. I've always thought it very pretty. Have you also thought of Callista which is just a shade more conventional while still being unusual. I like the idea of Calliope but it sounds too close to gallop I think.

As for Apollo - I think it's rather huge to live up to. Like Zeus or Thor or any other 'god' name I worry that it's a bit too big for a child to take on. That said, I Do like the sound of it. I love boys names ending in 'o' - Milo, Mungo, Jago, Cosmo, Rollo etc

Tigerschick · 04/02/2009 08:23

If you pronounce Calliope "Cal-ayo-pee" then I prefer it.
If you go for any other pronunciation then Calypso is better. I suppose you sill have less trouble with people not being able to pronounce it.

Not too keen on Apollo - agree with LuLuBai that it is a lot to live up to ...

annasmami · 04/02/2009 10:29

From your suggestions, I like Octavio for a boy. What about Octavia for a girl?

namehelp · 04/02/2009 11:19

Tiggerschick thats probably the pronunciation we would use, I'm not the best at spelling phonetically.

TBH I'm not keen on Apollo myself, I agree it's a lot to live up too.

Quite like Callista, DH not to keen but it will go on the list.
I know a Milo, Jago and Cosmo. I like Mungo (we are scottish) but DH hates it.

Annasmami I LOVE Octavio and Octavia but DH really isn't keen on them.

Anyone else got any other suggestions?

Calypso is a kind of music...!
MUCH prefer Calliope (pronounced Cal-I-Oh-Pee)
And I do like Callista too.

Are you into the Greek Mythology thing?

Artemis?
Helene
Xanthe?

Fennel · 04/02/2009 11:28

We had Calypso and Calliope on our dd3 shortlist. Also Calisto. And ended up with the suggestion here that's "a shade more conventional while still being unusual". For exactly that reason. And she's called Callie or Cal for short.

I stil like Calypso and Calliope though.

georgimama · 04/02/2009 11:30

Orlando?

What about Honeysuckle? I actually really like it!

namehelp · 04/02/2009 11:34

Lastbox We do like greek mythology thank you for the website. I meet an Artemis once problem is everyone though the baby was a boy.

Fennel we would probably call her Callie.

Odin
Merlin
Griffin
Maxim
Willem

Jasmine
Florentine
Maggie
Lizzie
Cordelia
Nancy

Di sclaimer:- I would not choose any of the above names personally

Lemontart · 04/02/2009 11:40

Calliope is also the name of a lovely musical instrument that makes a very haunting sound. (Also the lover of the War God Ares...)

I think it is quite pretty. Calypso just reminds me of those glow in the dark ice lollies unfortunately!
