Calypso or Calliope

DH and I cant agree on a name at all. Mainly because he likes very popular names and I like unusual. Neither of us like nicknames but realize this isn't something we cant control so it's important to us that we also like the shortened version of a name although we probably wont use it.

We really like Callie for a shortened name and we both really like Calypso. I really like Calliope too, DH undecided on it.

So any opinions on Calypso or Calliope?

Any other suggestions?

We have dont have a boys name either so any help on that would be greatly appreciated.

DH says he likes common popular names yet keeps suggestion Apollo? I thinking thats a step too far.

I like all sorts of boys name my favorite is Octavio.

I really like Callista. Not sure I'm brave enough for Calypso or Calliope.

For a boy, what about Oreste?

lastboxoftampons · 04/02/2009 11:45

namehelp - funny because I'm quite familiar with the myth as I worked on a show called Artemis, and even I had stop to think if Artemis was the goddess or the guy

namehelp · 04/02/2009 11:46

Georgimama DH isn't keen on anything like Honey.

I quite like Orlando.

I love Hero but DH think that's just too much to live up too.

I quite like Adriano for a girl.

I like Calypso

MrsMattie · 04/02/2009 11:53

ROTFL.

Please don't. Just call the poor kid Callie if that's what you like!

sobloodystupid · 04/02/2009 11:55

What was the name of Florence Nightingale's sister? It began with a P... summat like Persephone or similar... can anyone tell me also how to pronounce it? (Sorry for hijack!)

sbs - Parthenope?

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 04/02/2009 12:19

I like Clio, not mad about Calliope, Calypso would grow on me. Suits a very confident woman. I'd hate to be very shy and have to say "it's me Calypso" when I rang people up.

Fimbo's list is lovely . Cordelia has great nns. Coco, Didi, Celia, Delia, Clio (!?)
Love Nancy, Maggie and Flora too

claireybrations · 04/02/2009 12:26

Calliope makes me think of callipers (and therefore Tiny Tim ). That is just me being ignorant though...am sure not many other people would make that association

namehelp · 04/02/2009 13:17

MrsMattie the problem is we don't like nicknames, so we are trying to find a name which if shortened we will like the nickname. If we name our child Calypso or Calliope we will use the full version.

I really like Cordelia but DH can't stand Delia smith and would be annoyed if it was shortened to Delia.

My favorite favorite name is Willow but DH really doesn't like nature names.

We both like Penelope, could live with people calling her Penny.

So far the girls names are:
Calypso
Calliope
Callista
Penelope
Octavia (isn't keen but coming round to it)
Adriano

Really struggling on the boys names.

We have an Apollo in the family which I actually really like, but then they live in a Spanish-speaking country so it's abbreviated to "Poli" which is quite sweet, but over here it automatically becomes Polly, which, when teamed with their ultra-British surname just sounds hilarious. I think you have to have a cool surname to pull it off.
Of the Callie names I prefer Calista, very original. Calliope reminds me too much of the melon cantaloupe, and calypso is an ice-lolly isn't it?
Anyway I can talk, my DS's name sounds very like a drink which I will not name but I don't care because I love it!

boccadellaverita · 04/02/2009 13:38

I like Calypso (thanks to Mary Wesley), Calliope less so. I think Apollo is just a bit too wacky, but don't be deterred if it's your favourite name. How about Lysander?

Having spent yesterday in the library compensating for the school being closed I can confirm that Florence Nightingale's sister was indeed Parthenope.

MadameCastafiore · 04/02/2009 13:44

What about Kia Ora or Umbongo?

MadreInglese · 04/02/2009 13:49

snurk @ Umbongo

boccadellaverita · 04/02/2009 13:57

But Calypso is a fine name and was so long before the lolly was invented.

How about Irnbru for a boy - has a strong manly resonance, I feel.

KateF · 04/02/2009 14:03

I know a Calliope (pronounced Call-ee-oh-pee) known as Callie. People always blink when they hear it the first time but then get used to it. Her siblings are Alexander, Phoebe and Helena and yes, they do have Greek heritage! I definitely prefer Calliope to Calypso.

BabyBaby123 · 04/02/2009 14:07

sorry, they are all really, really awful - why would you want to inflict names like those on your child?

fishie · 04/02/2009 14:07

how funny, dh's girl choice was calliope and ds's actual name is on fimbo's boy's name. neither of them are particularly common.

cal-eye-oh-pee

fishie · 04/02/2009 14:09

babybaby123 i can see you aren't exactly spectacularly gifted on the 'choosing a nice interest name' front.

BabyBaby123 · 04/02/2009 14:11

really? and what do you base that on? You don't know my children's names

imo they are awful - not intersting - just awful

Fennel · 04/02/2009 14:11

This thread is turning into a roll call for my dds and cats

The reason I like names like these - apart from the fact I love the sounds of many Greek words - is that I have a boring name and it's tedious. Always having other people with my name around. I see names as a unique identifier for a child/person, and what's the point of giving them a name which others in their class/peer group/school are likely to have? So that you end up having to identify a child by its surname as well as its first name? To me that doesn't make a lot of sense.

I see it as quite useful that my dds don't have names shared by others in school or generally around the place. So that they work, as identifiers.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 04/02/2009 14:14

Mary Wesley's Calypso was a shallow character who married for money, partied through the war and then abandoned her child Hamish (with her late husband's nanny).

Wouldn't endear me to the name Calypso! Love the name Polly though!

CuppaTeaJanice · 04/02/2009 14:15

Calypso is a 1980s Froot-Shoot type drink that came in a triangular carton.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 04/02/2009 14:15

endear the name Calypso TO me I mean. I'm multi-tasking!
