Calypso or Calliope

namehelp · 04/02/2009 00:10

DH and I cant agree on a name at all. Mainly because he likes very popular names and I like unusual. Neither of us like nicknames but realize this isn't something we cant control so it's important to us that we also like the shortened version of a name although we probably wont use it.

We really like Callie for a shortened name and we both really like Calypso. I really like Calliope too, DH undecided on it.

So any opinions on Calypso or Calliope?

Any other suggestions?

We have dont have a boys name either so any help on that would be greatly appreciated.

DH says he likes common popular names yet keeps suggestion Apollo? I thinking thats a step too far.

I like all sorts of boys name my favorite is Octavio.

The only boy's name from ancient Greek that I like is Leonidas (King of Sparta, fought the Persians with his 300 at Thermopylae). If I have dc3 and it is a boy... (please let it happen!)

namehelp · 04/02/2009 16:08

Peachy I love Stirling, seems like a good professional name too me.
Do people shorten it?

OP posts:
Peachy · 04/02/2009 16:10

Not as a rule, no. He's 8 and that ahsn't happened yet.

alexpolismum · 04/02/2009 16:12

I disagree that Calypso will be Callie at home, Lypsy elsewhere. If she introduces herself to people as Callie, then they will probably call her that. I have a long first name with several possible nicknames, but my friends have always called me what I call myself, which happens to be the nickname favoured by my mother.

Peachy · 04/02/2009 16:15

Did kids really do that at school? My maiden anme was Godfrey and I hated it but was called Godders (as I have a one syllable unshortenable first name).

Probably just varies on the kids you meet? And probably as you say if there's a shortening readi;y available- Samuel is called Sam, maybe they go with easiest option?

I quite like Lypsy anyhow.

namehelp · 04/02/2009 16:18

mmm Really like Stirling for a boy!

alexpolismum · 04/02/2009 16:19

You're probably right, it was the easiest option. But yes, all my schoolmates called me by my preferred nickname (although sometimes I admit they shortened it still further, like people say Debs instead of Debbie for Deborah. And no, my name is not Deborah).

Peachy · 04/02/2009 16:20

Me too nametaken but mroe importantly, so does he LOL

LuLuBai · 04/02/2009 17:07

People will mostly shorten it to what you shorten it to. I have a long Italian name with several possible abbreviations. Some people go for the most obvious one, but once I've told them what I am usually known as only the most extremely dense-headed continue to get it wrong.

So namehelp are you sorted then? Calypso at number 1 on the girls' list? Do we need to keep working on boys' names?

namehelp · 04/02/2009 17:14

Calypso is number one.

Any help with a boys name would be greatly appreciated.
Stirling is a contender but DH is concerned that we could end up living near or even in Stirling.

Sonny wouldn't go with our surname.
Cassius is lovely.

Solomon

namehelp · 04/02/2009 19:50

Solomon is a good strong individual name. Not so sure if we would like the nickname solo.

DH like Ace, but to me it sounds more like a nickname.
Anyone got any suggestions for names that could be shortened to Ace?

I like Gabriel but DH says it makes him think of angels.

OP posts:
dragonbutter · 04/02/2009 20:00

my sol is just sol. not solomon. although i do actually call him solomon at times.
i think solly is the most common nickname, i've never heard of solo.

audley · 04/02/2009 21:19

Acer
Jervace
Wallace
Horrace!

namehelp · 04/02/2009 23:03

What a shameful scot I am totally forgot about Wallace!

I actually like Audley for a boys name.

Dragon Sol is a good nickname much better than Solo.

So for boys we have:
Stirling (my fav so far)
Solomon
Gabriel
Wallace
Audely

Mmm none are absolute favorites but I think that because I love Octavio.

LuLuBai · 07/02/2009 10:20

How is your DH with Octavio? If you really love it then do use it. My DDs name makes me happy every single day. I really, really love it (my struggle now is to find something that I love equally for DC2 due in 8.5 weeks)

If you like Audley, have you thought of Aubrey? I had it on my boys list last time (although this time it's not really 'sticking' for some reason). Gabriel is on my boys list too, although it is somehow a bit clumsy with our surname.

Stirling is very cool too (although I can see why you may have reservations if you are planning to live around there).

namehelp · 07/02/2009 11:11

DH isn't too sure about Octavio but he loves Calypso so maybe we could come to the agrement that I will name a boy and he will name a girl.

I love Aubrey but it kind of rhymes with our surname.

DH and I really like Gabreil but we really wouldn't be happy for it to be shortened to Gabe.

It's a lot harder to name a baby than I though it would be!

OP posts:
LuLuBai · 07/02/2009 11:32

Yup - very hard indeed! I start stressing about names the moment I see the little line go blue.

I was a bit relieved when DD turned out to be a girl because we were both completely in agreement on our top girl's name.

We seem to really struggle to agree on names for a boy.

And this time, if we have another girl, her name will always be second choice as we've used up our favourite girl's name on DD.

sigh

TinySocks · 07/02/2009 11:33

Can I be honest?
I think both names sound like alcoholic beverages. But if you like them go for it!

LuLuBai · 07/02/2009 11:35

Ah well - loads of women were called Ginny in the 50s, and I keep coming across baby Stellas now so boozy names are obviously OK.

Nighbynight · 07/02/2009 12:44

Go for Caroline shortened to Callie.
Calypso was a girl in the Mary Wesley novels, are you aware.

namehelp · 07/02/2009 21:13

nighbynight Caroline is my mothers and grandmothers name, both dislike the name and would be very unhappy if we were to use it.

Someone has already mentioned Mary Weslwy but I have never read anything of hers.

I really dont care/worry about a name becoming or if it already is a product names. Especially when it comes to Calypso as it's a real and very old name.
Plus we are considering a move abroad. Often company/popular culture names are only relevent to one country.

Finding it really difficult to find a boys name we BOTH love. I'm quite certain it's a boy.

OP posts:
LuLuBai · 08/02/2009 08:04

Callum? Scottish and you could still have a Callie.... but there may be too many of them around for your liking.

Bruce - very solid, very Scottish. I love it, but probably more traditional than you are looking for.

(Oh and fwiw I think you are right about brand names. I found out that my DDs pretty unusual name is a brand of budget tissues - doesn't bother me. An ice lolly is far more glam than paper tissues!)
