I have a friend who swears on a stack of bibles that an aquantance of hers named Mr and Mrs Royd named dd Emma and couldn't understand her shock at hearing this.

Another friend swears a child in the primary she works in is Giselle Onions. (Repeat it, and don't try and pronounce it all French like)

Also, in Stoke dialect, it you can't do something you say "I conner...". So why are there 2 kids in her school called Connor Cook and Connor Cope?

I was taught by a Sylvia Birch, but that was a cruel twist of marriage.

I have a surname which makes the say it aloud method essential.

Any other corkers out there.

Are you on the electoral roll?

Maybe it does electoral roll (in which case it wouldn't actually count children) so if you aren't on it....

dragonbutter, my husband wet himself at Di Stiph! I noticed she wore a wedding ring, and ssid "it's probably her married name". He wondered if her maiden name was floppy!

dragonbutter · 05/02/2009 15:00

mrsY, it was hilarious wasn't it. i can't believe rory bremner didn't mention it.

I worked with someone called Jenna Taylor, the thing is Jenna was short for Jennifer which sounds perfectly respectable. I wanted to ask her to consider using her full name to stop the sniggering as she was totally oblivious to it all.

Real people or names I have seen:
Carey Oakey
Michael Hunt (known as Mike)
Richard Head (why do parents do this?)
John Thomas
Andrew Pratt

A lecturer of mine told me that they thought long and hard about their son's name and called him Benjamin Richard - and were stunned when a neighbour said "oh, after the white goods people [Bendix]"

greenbeanie · 05/02/2009 16:33

I worked with a family who called their new baby son Wayne Kerr - say it out loud and see what you think . Poor child.

thumbwitch · 05/02/2009 18:23

evil, innit. I think Austin Healey must have had a bit of a rough ride as well, being named after a car.

harpomarx · 05/02/2009 18:29

watching a travel programme the other other day about Argentina, I roffled at the farm manager (a scottish immigrant) called Ronald MacDonald.

he didn't have orange curly hair, sadly.

nomoremagnolia · 05/02/2009 20:09

Great website, but is anyone else annoyed that it ought to be "you're not me"?
Anyway I'm unique

ImpatientGriselda · 05/02/2009 20:10

I once knew a Cliff Edge...

thumbwitch · 05/02/2009 21:25

nomoremagnolia, me too! I tried to ignore it though...
I am also unique with my maiden name and rare as a wombat's wingnut with my married name. DH doesn't exist. DS is another wingnut.

Jux · 05/02/2009 22:41

I've just tried Maretta's link. This is what I got:

"You are unique. You are one with the angry Squirrel. Shout 'I am the unique. I am unified with the badger overlord.' People will run away. That's because they're jealous. JEALOUS.."

So, I am one with the angry squirrel and unified with the badger overlord. Well, fancy that.

Washersaurus · 05/02/2009 22:56

I once knew a Theresa Green...not very exciting but it used to amuse us

NormaJeanBaker · 05/02/2009 23:35

I knew a Major Richard Head (in the army) and a brother and sister called Merlin and Fanny Hymen.

NormaJeanBaker · 05/02/2009 23:35

Also a Lois Schorer

thumbwitch · 05/02/2009 23:43

ihavenewsockson · 05/02/2009 23:43

GrimmaTheNome · 05/02/2009 23:50

Oooh, I'm unique! But thats cos DH has an odd name which is only common in Bridgewater . Theres only two of his name and I bet the other is a relation.

SniffyHock · 05/02/2009 23:54

There's only 2 of me now! There was 250 with my maiden name.

My Auntie Ita (pronounced eat-a) married Tom Bird so is now Ita Bird

pedalmonster · 06/02/2009 09:05

I used to be friends with a guy called David Lear. Which was fine until he decided to marry his girfriend, Shandy. Shandy Lear. And the worst thing - she couldn't understand why it was so funny. TRagic.
