I liked this if baby turned out to be a boy but recently heard of a wee girl with the name.
What is the mn opinion!
Don't want to give a boy a girls name iyswim!
This is dc 4 and the name sounds nice with the other dcs names.

Ah but, Rachie B, I would point to the Bible as evidence that James and Thomas were first names first, if you see what I mean. Evan, I think, is the Welsh form of John, isn't it?

Cough cough

My Daughter is an ELLIS..

a lady I knew had a baby girl and called her Ellis.. although Ellie was very popular at the time, she was known as Ellie.. this baby was big and bonny with a great big gummy grin.. I fell in love with the baby and the name.... may have been different if she whinged and smeit of sick... but there you go... I thought we would call her Ellie but rarely do...

years ago there were 2 Girl Ellis's in DD's swimming class...

still love the name... it really suits her.. although her friends now call her Elle...

I'm afraid round 'ere this is reserved for Chavvy boys. Sorry.

Along these kind of 'plain' lines why not Ines for a girl which is I think far nicer and far more elegant and - female!

RachieB · 04/02/2009 18:54

bocca lol yes of course

i dont actually know anyone with the surname Ellis ?????? lol

chavvy ?! how veeeeerrrrrry dare you! pmsl

tis a lovely welsh name

here it is soooo not chavvy nor is Morgan ( which has been slated for being chavvy on here many times)

oldraver · 06/04/2009 01:26

My DS is Ellis, it comes from Elijah so a boys name

I believe in the US it is very popular as a gilrs name

FairLadyOfMuslinCloth · 06/04/2009 01:31

Isn't it a welsh boys name.might be wrong...

I wouldn't use it for either. It's a boy's name but sounds way too feminine and girly.

thumbbunny · 06/04/2009 10:05

I know a girl called Ellis too - I think it's getting more popular as a girl's name.

But don't let that stop you if you like it - lots of names are used by both (although fewer now):
Marion
Shirley
Evelyn
Vivien (should be spelt differently according to gender but frequently isn't)
Kay
Erin
Sid
Hilary
Frankie

thumbbunny · 06/04/2009 10:07

Actually the little girl I know called Ellis was named for her GM's surname (Ellis, obviously) - it is a surname in our family.

wotulookinat · 06/04/2009 10:15

I know a girl called Ellis so to me it is a girl's name.

wilbur · 06/04/2009 10:16

I think I'm in the minority, but I think of it as a girl's name as my mother's best friend was called Ellis. Cool name either way, though.

purpleduck · 06/04/2009 10:25

Isn't Ellis Meredith's mum in Grey's Anatomy?

donna101 · 06/04/2009 13:27

I like it for a girl too its at the top of my girls name list!

loppylou · 07/04/2009 19:32

My DS2 is Ellis, I know another Ellis that is a boy, think its more of a boys name.
Ellis for a girl or boy
Elis for a boy
My niece is Elise so very confusing for the grandparents they are always getting mixed up

janeite · 07/04/2009 19:34

I know a boy called Ellis: he is probably the most beautiful looking little boy I have ever seen!

Don't like it for a girl at all but love Elise or Esme.

tiggerlovestobounce · 07/04/2009 19:39

I know a girl called Ellis, it suits her. Before I saw this thread it hadnt occured to me that Ellis could be a boys name.

nappyaddict · 13/04/2009 12:34

It's definitely a boy's name. It can be short for Elijah.

RachieB · 15/04/2009 14:01

surely Eli is short for Elijah?

lol

mileniwmffalcon · 15/04/2009 14:03

ellis is a boy's name
