Laura, Lara or Lyra?

Laura seems the most sensible option and I do love the name, Lara used to make me think of Dr Zivago which I read when quite young and loved but now kind of makes me think of Lara Croft which I don't like as much. Lyra I really like and is a bit more unusual but DH says it sound too much like Myra which is no good at all as it makes him think of Myra Hindley! Interested in your opinions.

Laura

TwoIfBySea · 24/01/2009 22:03

Oh that is a tough choice. Okay, in order it would have to be:

Lyra (very current)
Laura (very Little House)
Lara (puts me in mind of a neighbour, not good association!)

BabyBaby123 · 24/01/2009 22:06

i like Lyra!

listenglisten · 24/01/2009 22:07

Lyra reminds me of some pencils I have at work

Laura is quite pretty

Really like Lara

ja9 · 24/01/2009 22:07

i like them all but current fave would be lara. had a childhood friend called lara but only recently realised how beautiful the same is!

Wheelybug · 24/01/2009 22:10

We're considering Lara for the bump if its a girl - also like Lyra but not sure if its very 'now' due to Philip Pullman (was it a name before this ?). Laura fine but agree a bit 1970s.

Lauren ? I like this too but have a cousin with a Lauren so can't use.

DistortedAngel · 24/01/2009 22:12

Think the name comes from the musical instrument - didn't realise it was in Pullman novels as I haven't read them. Northern Lights I presume???

Lara is lovely.

Laura very classic.

Lyra trying too hard.

CantSleepWontSleep · 24/01/2009 22:14

Lycra?

wheesht · 24/01/2009 22:16

Lyra is lovely

BabyBaby123 · 24/01/2009 22:16

Layla is nice....

TwoIfBySea · 24/01/2009 22:17

Lyra is a constellation, not just a character. Which is a beautiful reason to use the name for a daughter.

It is written in the stars.

mummyloveslucy · 24/01/2009 22:20

I like Lyla.

eekamoose · 24/01/2009 22:20

Lara. Its gorgeous (was in my top 3 for dd).

Libralovesbiscuits1975 · 24/01/2009 22:22

Lara.

lotspot · 24/01/2009 22:29

not keen on lara....the one i knew as a teenager was VERY odd

lyra i think sounds lovely =] but written down makes me think of lycra which isn't a fab conotation!!

Laura is pretty and i like it but next to the others seems a bit dull - no offence as i really like the name myself just don't think i'd use it iyswim

mowbraygirl · 24/01/2009 22:43

Laura. I am a bit prejudiced as it is the name of our niece.

lobeov · 25/01/2009 04:59

Laura Lovely name!

jellybeans · 25/01/2009 08:34

Lara by far the nicest.

Cies · 25/01/2009 08:52

Laura or Lara.

I think Lyra is a bit too "of the moment."

Have you thought about Lorna? - vv pretty IMO.

violethill · 25/01/2009 09:34

Lyra

It doesn't seem to have caught on as an ultra popular name, which is good, but is really lovely.

LaDiDaDi · 25/01/2009 10:16

Laura is great [prejudiced emoticon].

Less keen on Lara or Lyra but both are ok.

I also love Clara and Lorna.
