Caleb and Marion are the only ones that really translate to me.

For girls I think Rhiannon/Rhian, Bronwen, Bethan, Carys travel better.

chancelloroftheexchequers · 23/01/2009 17:00

I love Seren too.

Can't think of any boys names that translate particular well.

Oh, Rhys.

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2009 17:00

I think Cerion, Brinli, Manon, Anona, Dilys and Marion are the least likely to be mispronounced. But the ones I like best are Iolo/Iola and Gwion.

Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:01

Caleb is one of my faves. Is it a bit (hate this word) 'chav'?
Loads of Serens about & trying to avoid anything with Rh

Or how about Nia or Aled? Or Gethin or Rhydian?

chancelloroftheexchequers · 23/01/2009 17:02

Whereabouts do you live OP?

I'd say you'd get away with any of them in central London or similar but not in some English idyll somewhere.

CandleQueen · 23/01/2009 17:04

Love Gwion.
We have a Dewi. My 3YO is a dab hand at spelling it and telling old ladies "D E W I. It's a Welsh name."

Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:05

Aled is ex boyf's name & too close to DP's name
Not keen on Nia, nice sound but a bit run of the mill in wales (sorry Nias)
Rhydian makes me think of x-factor. Gethin ok

Live in London so plenty of 'different' names here

Desiderata · 23/01/2009 17:06

Yestin (I'm not sure of spelling) is the Welsh version of Justin, I believe.

Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:06

2 in favour of Gwion then, great. DP not convinced at all but I've always liked it (he's not welsh)

BTW we;re in the English idyll of Hastings!

I really like Ioan, but possibly because I used to have a massive crush on Ioan Gruffudd!
Nia is a beautiful girls name.

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2009 17:07

Oh yes, like Iestyn.

chancelloroftheexchequers · 23/01/2009 17:07

My cousin is Dewi, love that. His brother is Deiniol, I love that too actually.

I think you could have any of the names on your list living in London but must confess I don't really like any of them.

MrsMattie · 23/01/2009 17:07

Cerrion and Caleb are nice. I know a guy callled Cerri.
I have always preferred your pronunciation of Caleb, too.

Manon and Anona are nice, too.

Caia is very pretty, and probably my favourite.

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2009 17:07

I also like Gwydion.

Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:09

not that keen on Iestyn tbh
Deiniol reminds me of someone I know who's not v nice
CQ I'm partial to a bit of Ioan too..

OP posts:
Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:10

SMTB ooh didn't think of Gwydion, like it

BikeRunSki · 23/01/2009 17:10

Brinli looks a bit like you are "modernising" a surname to use as a surname and looks also, a bit chav.

I work with a Dilys (in England, not London) and has many probs with her name even though it seems to be pretty phoenetic to me.

Back to the OP though - I think Marion and Caleb are the only ones which would work easily in England, and then I suspect you would get a lot of "Cay-leb".

Lewis? Lloyd?

Please use my favorite girls names ever - Elin and Carys - I would have done if 1 - I still lived in Wales and 2 - had any girls.

Guto - Guto Harry seems to have made it more familiar in England.

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2009 17:11

The pricipal bassoonist in the London Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s was called Gwydion Brooke. Thats how I've heard of it.

SoMuchToBits · 23/01/2009 17:12

Eluned/Eiluned?

oneblueandonepink · 23/01/2009 17:12

Boy - Caleb
Girl - Carys

BikeRunSki · 23/01/2009 17:13

If you like Iollo, but think there are too many about, then what about Ianto?

I think Caia would get to confused with Gaia, which is seems to be getting more popular by the minute round 'ere. But nice name.

atowncalledalice · 23/01/2009 17:14

DS2 has a friend called Taryn. I like that name.

BikeRunSki · 23/01/2009 17:14

Peris has a lot of teasing potential, with a small school-boy tweak of the middle letter!

Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:15

BRS I have always liked Elin but one in the family (under 5). Think I prefer Cerys to Carys, not sure
I do like Guto but won't he be teased and called a git?
