Carys is lovely (i have one but we are in the wilds of wales ) Love Angharad, Tomos, Gareth.

mejon · 24/01/2009 13:58

I like Iolo, Gwion, Caleb and Ioan from your boy list. Twm is nice but I'd probably have Tomos as his proper name with Twm as petname. Unfortunately I think most of them will be mispronounced: as Jic says, often people won't even try (mae gen i Gwenno hefyd Jic!)

From your girl choices I like Manon, Anona/Nona, Awela and Iola. Don't really like Caia - rhy seisnig? Dilys and Marion/Marian are quite old fashioned/old lady-ish - sorry.

I love Nannw, Mabli, Awen, Elain, Elin, Iona...

I just posted in another thread about Welsh names but Cariad is a girl's name. I understand it's a term of endearment in Welsh.

ilikeyoursleeves · 24/01/2009 17:02

I like Evan which is Welsh for John apparantly. Would work very well outside Wales!

laumiere · 24/01/2009 19:31

Had DS2 been a girl he'd have been Arianwen (said as its spelt (Ar-ee-an-wen) and I love it as a name, means 'more precious than riches'.

Boy's names

Cian (pronounced key-an) our DS1 has this as a middle name and living in London we've had Key-own, Cyan, Cain) etc so it can be difficult for people.

I'd suggest Gethin, Owain,Ianto (thanks to Torchwood)and Ieuan (Yi-yan)

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/01/2009 19:42

We have welsh names for our ds's but easily see + say for my English family

Aled, Rhys, Evan and Wyn

For girls we liked Lowri, Bronwyn, Elin and Mair.

weetimerousdizzybeastie · 24/01/2009 20:56

oohh I love gethin too

lolianja · 25/01/2009 19:42

When I was at school (90s and early 00s) we were positively swimming in lads called Rhys or Gareth, almost none of whom were actually Welsh. Both very nice names, I think. Although I am, as ever, slightly biased as I was madly in love with a lad in my class called Gareth in Year 12 and babysat a wonderful tot called Rhys.

Rhys' popularity has burgeoned but Gareth seems to have gone out. Don't know any under the age of about 16.

lolianja · 25/01/2009 19:43

Should clarify - am in Essex, not Wales!

Mammina · 28/01/2009 15:04

sorry took me a while to get back to everyone. thanks for all your suggestions, have shortened the list somewhat, now just need to get dh to agree to one of them, which is the hardest bit

I love Emrys for a boy!

Essie3 · 29/01/2009 20:23

Did I hear someone calling me? Welsh speaker here!

Desiderata, SoMuchToBits thank you, thank you. Iestyn is my son's name.

An opinion on how common some of them are - cause sometimes names can sound nice but be a bit weird!
Peris and Cerion are not common in n. Wales, but they are in mid-Wales, I think (well, Cerion is anyway). Telor and Pabo are somewhat rare. Pabo is rather Catholic.
Tecwyn - personally don't like it because all the Tecwyns I know (and the Tecses) are older. There's also the TV character Tecwyn y Tractor...
Caleb - don't know any, like the name. Not at all chav in Wales (but sort of see how it might be in English).
Gwion and Ioan - were both on my shortlist!
Brinli that's not how I've seen it spelt, and it's rather rare. Also a bit older?

Iolo - not many around here.

Girls names all lovely except Marion looks English, the Welsh form is Marian.

Other suggestions - Ianto, fun!

Avoid Gwydion - he's a medieval Welsh character and somewhat dodgy.

How about Ifan instead of Evan?

Mammina · 30/01/2009 15:52

How strange Essie that Peris is common in mid-Wales - you'd think it would be more popular in Gwynedd (although I know it's not) - it was my great uncle's name (never met him) & have always like it but change the R to an N and you'll have loads of teasing at school. Cerion is also a family name.
Have gone off Telor (bit too similar to Taylor) and Pabo does make you think of the Pab I suppose.
Good point about Tecwyn y Tractor.
Caleb still my fave but DH hates it.
Can't use Ianto, 2 friends have used it recently. Nice though.
Not many Iolos? Really?
Brinli very old yes but think there's something cute about it.
Like Ifan but everyone would always pronounce it Iffan which would do my head in
Gwydion makes me think of the wizard - but I can't remember any more about him, so he was dodgy then?! Must brush up on my mabinogi!

Oooh yes. Emrys. My nephew is Emrys, how could I forget? Lovely.

I also like Huw (but oddly, not Hugh).
