I love the name Scarlett but not sure if they are associated with red heads?

No, but she should be in a novel

LadyPinkofPinkerton · 23/01/2009 13:48

I always think dark hair. I personally don't like the name Scarlett for blondes. Don't know why, it just doesn't seem right

zazen · 23/01/2009 13:54

In Ireland to say someone is "scarlet" means they have become so mortified ("morto") by something they have blushed and blushed and then some.

I was scarlet - for eg would mean that they so embarrassed they were unable to stop blushing.

Unfortunately the word scarlet and the name Scarlett remind me of the same thing - being embarrassed. [And not in the French way of being embarrassed either enciente (pregnant)!]

I would personally avoid the name for a red head, but it would be fine on a fair or dark haired child.

Jackstini · 23/01/2009 14:00

Mine has light brown hair and blue eyes (pic on profile) and it suits her.
I associate more with personality - not for shy retiring little girls I suppose!

Fable · 23/01/2009 14:05

She is adorable Jackstini - do people like the name?

Hard to tell about personality when they are they are tiny!

Thanks Fable
Yes everyone likes the name and says it suits her. Have had the odd slip up from people saying Charlotte but not often and people do sometimes spell it with only 1 't' on the end.
I do remember thinking 'it is bound to suit her when she is born as most babies are red then' Not Scarlett, mustard yellow, covered in dried meconium, but there you go!

Lovely image that description conjured up Jackstini

The girl's name Scarlett \s-carle-tt, sc(ar)-lett\ is pronounced SCAR-let. It is of Old French origin, and its meaning is "RED".

So, if anything, I would tend to associate the name with red haired girls.

OrmIrian · 23/01/2009 16:58

No, but I suspect she should be a Southern Belle with flashing eyes.

Does that help?

RachieB · 23/01/2009 17:18

the only Scarlett i know DOES have red hair

and her name is shortened to "Scarly" ! lol

Mammina · 23/01/2009 17:26

TheStatueOfLiffey · 23/01/2009 19:09

lunamoon2 · 23/01/2009 20:04

I think more along the lines of Scarlett O'Hara.

gorgeous name!

pointydug · 23/01/2009 20:12

no, not at all

popsycal · 23/01/2009 20:13

the scarlett i know doesnt

TattyCatty · 23/01/2009 20:22

Having red hair at birth was my one criteria for not naming DD Scarlett - which would have been interesting given that it was the only name that I'd ever considered from even before she was conceived. Luckily she came out a brunette, although is now dark blonde. I always envisaged a brunette Scarlett, so I'm watching her hair with great interest!

seeker · 23/01/2009 20:30

I think one of the many reasons for not calling a child Scarlett is her having red hair! It would be like calling her "Ginger" or "Carrots"!

seeker · 23/01/2009 20:31

Actually, why don't we ever use vegetable names? Broccoli, anyone? Cassava?

pamelat · 23/01/2009 20:44

Dark hair associations. Fiery in a good way by nature.

notsoteenagemum · 23/01/2009 20:51

I'm with the Tatty and seeker, ds was going to be Scarlet but not if hair was red. I love the name- quite sad I never got to use it.

Fable · 24/01/2009 01:50

Fantastic! I love the name Scarlett and its very unlikely any dd of mine will be a red head, very happy

OP posts:
Karamazov · 24/01/2009 19:41

Definitely not! In fact I think it is rather naff to name any red headed child Scarlett / Rosie / Amber or any other red headed type name. Use it for a child with any hair colour except red imho!

SusieWinwood · 08/05/2009 10:35

I have a Scarlett, she is 7 months old today and has blonde hair an enormous blue eyes! she suits her name very well. A good friend of mine also has a Scarlett and she is a red head!

Karam · 08/05/2009 17:30

Agree with Seeker. Sacrlett is one of those names where is it just naff to give to a child with Red hair. Same goes for other 'Red headed' names.
