Just wanted to say, and she wasn't born on a Wednesday!

OP posts:

Madamant all I , and somebody else said, is that we couldn't see how you get Daisy from Wednesday. As one is not an abbreviation of the other. Eddie, however, is very obviously an abbreviation of Edward.

nothing to do with acceptability although, personally, i wouldn't name my child after a freak from a television show.

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 10/12/2008 16:03

Of course she can shorten it. Didn't say she couldn't.
Just seemed weird to start an unprompted thread saying :

'I love the name Wednesday, so that's what I'm calling my little girl. Oh but by the way I'll be calling her Daisy'!

Obviously just me that thinks it's odd in a no biggie, unbothered, funny sort of no offence meant way!

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 10/12/2008 16:05

I absolutley love the name Scout and that's what I'm naming her.

However I'll be be calling her Madeline!

Beyonce - and i don't care what anyone says.

(we'll be calling her Alice though)

greenday · 10/12/2008 16:14

Unquietdad - LOL your joke about 'enough with the children thing, let's call it a day!'

CountessDracula · 10/12/2008 16:14

I'm not sure about it
I think my view is coloured by a total arsehole I used to know called Sunday though

CountessDracula · 10/12/2008 16:16

It doesn't pass the playground screeching test unless you use the glottal stop though

wemmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmsssssss daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy

sounds terrible

MadamAnt · 10/12/2008 16:17

I presume you can now see how you get Daisy from Wednesday? As notdoing points out, the abbreviation has the same contruct as most pet names (a syllable from the name, plus ee sound).

The other jokey "examples" are not the same at all.

Nancy66 · 10/12/2008 16:23

Except there isn't any part of Wednesday that says 'Dayz'

Nes would be the most obvious abbreviation for me...blimey I'm getting a bit obsessed here!

thisisyesterday · 10/12/2008 16:28

nes?
surely that only works if you pronounce it wed-nes-day?

if she pronounces it wensday then that isn't obvious at all.

wednesDAY. DAY-sy. geddit?

or are people on this thread being purposely obtuse?

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 16:31

I think it's a great name - one of my favourite comfort books has a character called Thursday in it. I love the story behind it as well.

People might call her Wen though.

Nancy66 · 10/12/2008 16:31

don't you normally abbreviate names from the way they are spelt rather than the way they sound?

MadamAnt · 10/12/2008 16:43

Off the top of my head, I would say that most nicknames come from the sound of the name, rather than the spelling. However, there aren't many names (like Wednesday) that have silent letters in them, so it's difficult to distinguish what is spelling-based and what is pronunciation-based.

I personally wouldn't automatically think of Issy as a nick name for Isla, but that said I wouldn't think it odd if someone else chose to do so.

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 16:48

I don't abbreviate names myself but I'd take the lead from the parents. Personally I don't see the point in giving one name and then shortening it but each to their own.

I do get quite huffy if people shorten my daughter's name (it's not theirs to shorten!) but it makes me laugh if they do it to my name since it brings it down to one syllable instead of two. What's the point?

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 10/12/2008 16:49

Wednesday
Latin, English, "Born on the fourth day of the week"

With its similarity to Wendy, Wednesday makes a perfectly fine name for a girl, as long as you can get past the image of pale-skinned, big-eyed Wednesday Addams.

Variations
Wensday, Wenzday

Nicknames
Wendy

thisisyesterday · 10/12/2008 16:52

Nancy, Harry is a nickname for Henry.

so erm, no! lol

Simplysally · 10/12/2008 16:53

Polly can be short for Margaret.

ThomcatIsForLifeNotJustForXmas · 10/12/2008 16:54

And Sarah is a shortening of Sally!

MadamAnt · 10/12/2008 16:55

And Nancy is a pet form for Anne

But I STILL think it's odd to make a deal of starting a thread to say you love the name Wednseday but you'll e calling her Daisy! LOL! Fine, go for it, but why start a thread saying how much you love the name you're NOT calling your DD. Why not say I have a beautiful DD who we call Daisy, real name Wednesday. LOL! Actually that's still odd!

I love the name Sally andwe have decided to name her Sally. However we'll be calling her Sarah. They are different bloody names! Wednesday and Daisy are different names. Sorry, you can all keep saying it works for you, I just think it's funny!

MadamAnt · 10/12/2008 17:06

I don;t know why I'm persevering with this because It Does Not Matter, but the OP said she'd be calling her Daisy for short. i.e. she's not permanently discarding the full name, but she can use either name depending on the tone of the situation.

ggirlsbells · 10/12/2008 17:25

it is bloody odd to start a thread and then reveal you aren't actually calling her the name
