Hilda and middle names

Hello,

Dh are starting ttc after Christmas and we have got a short list of girls names already.
The only one we BOTH really love is Hilda so although there is at least 10 months to go, we think it might stick.
We are a bit stuck for middle names though, as we have used close family for our other 4 children, so this time we can use pretty much whatever we like, but we are a bit stuck!

Any suggestions? Other dc's have two mn's but one or two is fine.

Also have a double barrelled surname sounding like Barmy - Monsters!

Other names we like are
Mary
Joan
Prudence
Dorothy
Althea
Enid

and one other front runner that i cannot for the life of me remember!!!!

So opinions and mn's please. Have to go offline for the afternoon in a bit, but i will be back!

Thanks all

My granny was a Hilda Mary . Lovely to see some traditional names for a change instead of all those silly made-up ones ...

WishIKnewWhatToDo · 04/12/2008 13:47

My gran is also hilda, hilda may lovely name.

Hilda Mary is gorgous - it was one of our chices - but we thought if we had another baby girl we might like to use Mary for her!

I think Hilda is dreadful! I know one aged 40 and it seems so odd that she should have an 'old ladies' name. I would find it really embarrassing if it was my name. Like being called Ethel or Mildred or Gertrude.

piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 14:06

The only one I like is Mary.

ComeOVeneer · 04/12/2008 14:07

piscesmoon, do you not think your comment abit unkind, especially as the op has said she loves the name and also wasn't asking for opinions on it?

DeckHallsWithFIMBOughsofHolly · 04/12/2008 14:08

Hilda Marigold

piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 14:20

I think if people post on the baby name board they should be prepared for all opinions. In RL I never say anything negative about a name but I am honest on here. I would put a pretty name for the second name and then she has the option to use it when older. My 80 yr old Aunt Hilda dislikes her name and everyone knows her by a nick name.

frazzledoldbag34 · 04/12/2008 14:22

I think Hilda Mary sounds the best.

WishIKnewWhatToDo · 04/12/2008 14:28

There are two hilda's at my nephews school - i think it is really lovely and now seen as a modern name. At least it is round here - and im only 24 and i like it.

piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 16:36

Perhaps it is the 'new' Ruby and we will get lots!

ChippyMinton · 04/12/2008 16:56

My grandmother was Hilda Violet.
definately due for a revival

LilySwalLoosHerTurkeyBaster · 04/12/2008 17:02

May is lovely

claireybaubles · 04/12/2008 17:04

My grandmother is Hilda Jessica, known as Jessie though

seeker · 04/12/2008 17:09

My friend is called Hilda - and she hates it with a passion! To the extent that she always (and she's nearly 40) sounds aggressive whenever she gives anyone her name - an unspoken "Want to make something of it?" hovering in the air. I have known her since she was 14, and she has never got used to it.

You did ask........>!

SoupDragon · 04/12/2008 17:16

Hilda is a shocking name. There are far prettier traditional/old fashioned girls' names out there.

Anna8888 · 04/12/2008 17:17

Agree with SoupDragon

piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 17:24

That is what I was saying but was accused of being unkind-the one that I know in her 40's hates it with a passion! I don't think it is unkind-just fair to warn OP that people with the name don't like it!

SoupDragon · 04/12/2008 17:26

I don't see how you can be unkind about a potential name for a baby who isn't even conceived yet

Anna8888 · 04/12/2008 17:27

Baby name threads are ones on which I think it is very important to be terribly honest.

cece · 04/12/2008 17:27

Althea is lovely. That is what DS was going to be called until he upset the applecart and turned out to be a boy!

With Hilda I like

Jane
Rose
Margaret
June
Penelope

Oh and just spotted you have Enid on your list, another favourite of mine

Anna8888 · 04/12/2008 17:28

Cece - all those names, and all the OP's names, make me think of elderly lower middle class women in neat suburban bungalows...

piscesmoon · 04/12/2008 17:30

Enid is almost as bad as Hilda. If she wants to use it she needs something pretty for the middle name IMO.

SoupDragon · 04/12/2008 17:30

I'm not an elderly lower middle class woman in a neat suburban bungalow.
