Hilda and middle names

Hello,

Dh are starting ttc after Christmas and we have got a short list of girls names already.
The only one we BOTH really love is Hilda so although there is at least 10 months to go, we think it might stick.
We are a bit stuck for middle names though, as we have used close family for our other 4 children, so this time we can use pretty much whatever we like, but we are a bit stuck!

Any suggestions? Other dc's have two mn's but one or two is fine.

Also have a double barrelled surname sounding like Barmy - Monsters!

Other names we like are
Mary
Joan
Prudence
Dorothy
Althea
Enid

and one other front runner that i cannot for the life of me remember!!!!

So opinions and mn's please. Have to go offline for the afternoon in a bit, but i will be back!

Thanks all

Matilda sounded very severe and matronly when i first re-heard it (Hilaire Belloc aside) ten years ago

tilda sounds like rice to be honest...

I think hilda to be lovely

people on these threads will blush i years to come when they realise the error of their ways

its all about fashion

Hilda Matilda Barmy-Monster is a really quite stunning name.

I don't think that people will blush in years to come! Sadly I think the Hilda's will continue to hate (and be embarrassed) by their name and it won't be popular for long!
My mother has a very similar name, she hated it at 5, and she hates it now! Her sister was called Elsie and refused to use it except for the most formal of occasions! It is like saying that Muriel will make it back-I defy anyone to like Muriel!

piscesmoon · 05/12/2008 07:57

I don't think Matilda is at all similar and it can be shortened to Tilda, Tilly or Matty-better than Hil or Hilly. I don't think Terry is too bad (although I would never use it) but it is from Terence, a horrible name. Jack is a classic and timeless.

[puts money on muriel loving mumsnetters flocking to the thread in droves]

I won't blush in years to come, I think it's a horrid name and always will. It's not about fashion, it's about personal taste.

My grandmother was a Beatrice. She hated it and was known as BeeBee (her surname was B too. Now, I quite like Beatrice but in deference to her hatred of it, I gave BabyDragon her middle name as one of her middle names instead of Beatrice.

Is Hilda terribly fashionable then?
i did not think we would be swamped with them i must say!
Thank you for all opinions - and i am uninsultable so dont worry about that!
I must say i want to try and avoid something overly trendy, as i want to try not to date lo - my boys have quite unusual biblical names (which cant date in my opinion because they have been used my Jewish and Christian folks for ever) and other girls have old fashioned but classic names so dont want anything to on trend!

Old fashioned classical names are lovely as are most things biblical IMO. Choosing Hilda is like people saying that Brenda is a lovely name in 10 yrs time!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Hilda Ogden

piscesmoon · 05/12/2008 17:40

Probably too young-she is my mental picture of a Hilda!

brettgirl2 · 06/12/2008 09:14

I like Mary though. I think that names get associated with people - maybe if it is given to a baby it will take on her personality?

My Granny is called Vera and I love that name - apart from the fashion designer it's considered a real old lady's name. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to use it though.

ButterflyBessie · 06/12/2008 09:25

Margaret Thatcher's middle name was Hilda

I think it is a dreadful name, and am amazed that people like it

Fortunately not everyone likes the same name, my dcs have very beautiful names {imho} but no one appears to agree with me

Good luck with the ttc, hopefully this time next year you will be gazing at your little iron lady in wonderment and joy

RachieB · 08/12/2008 12:41

Hilda and the other apart from Althea are awful !

cant imagine a baby called Hilda ?!!

bananaberry · 16/12/2008 16:51

Hey...my name is hilda and i love it. pretty much its not the name that makes the person but the person that makes the name and i have ROCKED that name!! i have made every girl in school wish their name was hilda. i don't have a middle name and i don't think i would want one. Hilda is the best name ever for me and it fits me. but if you want a middle name my friends do call me HildaMae as a nickname. Liliana also sounds good. but whatever you do...don't make her middle name matilda...that is the ONLY tease i ever got. they called me Hilda Matilda in school. and as far as being an old fashioned name...i'm 19 years old and the name fits me perfectly.

KateF · 16/12/2008 16:57

I had a lovely school friend named Hilda Rose but I have to say it's not a favourite of mine and I've never met another under 70!
