I like Agnes. Not sure I'd use it. My DD is Evelyn, if I had another girl, names would likely be of the list I keep of nice girl names which currently contains Matilda/Gabriella/Felicity

The only person I have ever met who shares my DD's name is an 80-year-old lady whom we met at a pedestrian crossing. I love these kinds of names. Go for it!

Like it . Could be adapted to Aggie / Nessie. I considered Agatha for my DD which I like alot.I also think it (Agnes) will be making a comeback! It's a bit like Angus for a boy and I'm hearing more of those as time goes by. Go for it if you like it. Ever been to St Agnes in Cornwall? Lovely.

In medieval times it was pronounced, and often spelt, "Annis". This is one of my favourite girl's names, but DH has always vetoed

Personally I like it, but do think it's too close to Alice. Esme is lovely, wish DH hadn't vetoed it for my DD.

I'm not sure you can win with their names anyway - mine is very short, inoffensive and boring and I hated it, wished I'd been given a more interesting name that could have had a cool nickname. Although I'd have probably hated a more interesting name as well - sigh.

If you must call her Agnes, give her a less controversial middle name so that she can choose herself later. I knew a girl at school whose first name was Samantha because her mum thought she could be nicknamed Sam, and be a tomboy. Nae luck, and the girl always used her more staid middle name.

There were 3 Angess in my year at school (and I'm in my 30s) but they were all from Hong Kong. Seems to be v popular with Chinese girls choosing an anglo name. I think it's cool too - Aggie is a great shortening too. It is in a similar vein to Margot to my ear. Don't like Esme though.

I know of someone who was named after her grandmother Agnes but they changed the spelling to read it backwards as Senga.

My DD was named after my Nan as I was very close to her growing up and it just seemed right - she had a very old fashioned name and I have never heard of anyone else called it except a famous author. Agnes does seem to be cropping up more often, I know of three (all under 5).

FWIW my partner comes from a family where unusual names are the norm and they all love having a name with a difference. But he has said it can be difficult at times when you are growing up - but he wouldn't change it. All of them have used unusual/less well known/used names for their children (including Agnes).

So.........If you like it use it, whatever you choose you run the risk of her not liking it when she grows up.
