Are we really the only ones to name our baby boy Sky?

I know lots of people would hate our baby boy's name, it's Sky - Skyler. We love* it obviously

Now (as my confused relatives tell me) there is Sky Masterson from Guys and Dolls and apparently a bloke from Mamma Mia called Sky but I wondered if there were any hippyMumsnetters with boys called Sky...
We can't be the only ones, surely.

Am convinced Skyler will be as popular as Finley one day think it's v trashy popular in the US.

*Seeker et al, please don't spontaneously combust with inner rage

Skyler? Arghhhh. Do you watch 'Heroes'?

i doubt it will ever be popular.

Flightofthenortybats · 13/10/2008 10:46

Do you want us to tell you what we really think?

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 13/10/2008 10:47

I have never heard of boys named Sky. There are a few girls named Sky in my town but no girls.

Apparently my little girl is the only person in the world with her whole hyphonated name. Both names are uncommon in my area. I have met one other girl who shares the first part of her name. No one in our town has the second part.

I'm sure if I had posted her name on mn before choosing it I would have had "fgs why?" DH is convinced that it is a "made up name" and his nephew thinks I have given her a boys name. I think its a really pretty name. Skyler is a great name too. Good on you for having the guts to go with the name you like

Flightofthenortybats · 13/10/2008 10:48

Actually you're not the only ones. I have three children called Skyler. My friend has twins who are bnoth called Skyler.

And school is full of them

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 13/10/2008 10:50

No, I kind of know what everyone thinks. The reaction is either 'oh wow! love it' (rare!!) or stunned confused silence (most people).

Heroes is Sylar

I was just really wondering if there was anyone else who named their baby Sky.

skylers are ten to the pound here in london town....

MrsMattie · 13/10/2008 10:52

lol

So it is.

Sorry, I'm still firmly in the 'stunned silence' camp.

Where does the name originate? It isn't a made up name, is it?

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 13/10/2008 10:52

See MrsMattie! Flighty's school is full of Skylers...

It is the anglicised version of Schuyler (scandinavian surname meaning scholar). I really liked Sky for a boy and dh saw Skyler in a --loony- names to call your baby names book and we both love it.

You wait.

Skyler is the new Alfie/Oscar/Wilbert...

Ah, so it's a spelling mistake! I understand now!

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 13/10/2008 10:58

My best friends dd is Skyler.

MrsMattie · 13/10/2008 10:59

OK. As long as it's not one of those loony American Rikki Lake names. And as long as the name 'Skyla' ('it just sounded so pweeeeety') never becomes a popular girl's name.

I will look out for a Skyler near me, soon!

p.s. excuse my typing. It has gone to pot today.

seeker · 13/10/2008 10:59

Actually, if I HAD to choose between Sky and Wilbert........hmmmmmm

MrsMattie · 13/10/2008 11:00

Oh Nooooooo!

Cross posts at WhereWolf

The invasion of girl Skylers is already happening...

slayerette · 13/10/2008 11:01

I like it.

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 13/10/2008 11:01

Oh and it is Dutch and means 'shelter'. Actually [thick emoticon] her name is Skylar not Skyler. And the above meaning is for that spelling ooops.

WhereWolfTheWildThingsWere · 13/10/2008 11:03

at MrsMattie, they are actually tres bohemian.

mangolassi · 13/10/2008 11:03

Not me, but friend has a boy called Skylor.

That really is misspelt. But then, they are American.

New dad said in his introducing-the-baby email, Skylor, rhymes with harbor.

MrsMattie · 13/10/2008 11:07

There you go@UmMwahahahaaaaa

Everyone knows a Skyler/Skylar/Skylor!

We could almost play Six Degrees of Skyler...

hannahsaunt · 13/10/2008 11:09

I love Skye. For a girl.

UmMwahahahaaaaa · 13/10/2008 11:12

Our dd is called KaffaRyn, Seeker. Actually, no, she is Aphra. But, Seeker, it's surely better than Richenda

So Skyler for a girl has made the transition from US... just as well, my Skyler is dressed in a pink flowery top today.

LOL at Six Degrees of Skyler! He is Smiler right now, bless him.
