Most popular names in your area? (Boys)

DH and I have been struggling with finding a boy's name we both like and finally agreed on Oscar, but I keep reading on threads here about how popular it is in certain areas.

Now I have no clue what names are commonplace around my way (SW London) so I am intruiged to know what you think are the most popular boys names for the area you live in? If you are happy to share where you live and the top 3 or so names, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts....

3 Oscars at our school ...

Here in West Kent, one of my friends' son is called Oscar, though I don't know of any others (and it's a lovely name). Amazingly there are no duplications among the families I know, but I do hear Joshua a lot when I'm out and about.

I wanted Atticus for DS but DH wouldn't let me, and we nearly went for Seth, which I've never heard any other babies round here called. Though eventually we decided on Paul, and I still haven't met another one, even though I think of it as a totally common name.

PIL's dog is Oscar.

Two Oscar's within two streets of us (that I know of)(both age 2-3).

My boys are Benjamin and Jacob, so both feature on here a lot.

We are in Winchester.

We chose Noah for DS1 as we liked it and it seemed pretty unusual, we hadn't come across any.

My mother was horrified - it just didn't compute for her as a name that people actually used these days.

Three years later and she now has 6 friends / acquaintances that also have GS called Noah - so she has been through the 'trendsetter' feeling and is now on 'you chose a very commonplace unoriginal name' - although I think she still feels a bit smug . And now she loves it as a name, definitely suits ds!

SE London, names I know duplicated in under 4s

Alexander (3)
Oliver (3)
Thomas (3)
Joseph (2)
Toby (2)
Sam /Samuel(4)
Louis (2)
George (3 people at work, was my chosen name but had to rule it out

I know of one Oscar who lives in North London (and one dog in Kent, sorry!!)

BigBadMousey · 10/10/2008 23:01

I think there are two or three Oscars at nursery - several at school.

Most popular name down here is Finlay/ Finn I think. It's not my favourite boys name and I'm getting better at perfecting my initial reaction each time a new mum introduces her Finlay .
